Last week our Forum member JayCeeNC provided me an extensive list of serial numbers that he had recorded for the early Pre-Model 27’s that were shipped in late 1949 and during 1950. He was tracking primarily barrel length, finish, hammer type (speed or semi-target), and shipping dates if available.

I have added these serial numbers to the SWCA Post War .357 Magnum Database and there are now over 200 Pre-Model 27’s listed - identified as “Short Action” in the database “Action” field.

The lowest Pre-Model 27 serial number now in this database is S75514 shipped in late 1949 and the highest serial number is S81498 probably shipped in late 1950.

Few of these new listings have current condition or original shipping destinations specified, and many are missing exact shipping dates. I also had to estimate front sight configuration which I did based on barrel length (example - most with 3-1/2” barrels have the Baughman QD front sight), and therefore some may be incorrect.

Anyway, if you own an early Pre-Model 27 within the serial number range specified above, and care to check the database for accuracy of your serial number, or want to add your serial number to the database, please send me a PM with your corrections or new information. For security purposes the database does not track current ownership or location information.

Below are two sample screen shots from the database - intended only to picture what data is tracked/listed when available. Click on the screenshots for a closer look.

I have Serial Number S76317. It has a 3 & 1/2 " barrel and according to Mr Jinks was shipped from the factory in May of 1950.

I had S79227, 5" barrel, manufactured October, 1950.

I sold it to a guy in Dallas who has since passed away, don't know what his daughter did with it. I have asked but she won't reply :(

I have 76023 blued 3 1/2 inch with early "speed hammer" I has a later red front sight insert and white outlined rear blade. I would appreciate hearing whether this was previously entered. Thank you.
