Swedish contract model 12

I just picked up this Swedish m58 from a German auction site. The m58 was a S&W model 12 contracted by the Swedish Airforce in 1958. I still have to get it stateside but I have a plan. Only one of 1500 issued and it comes with the original holster.

Nearly all of these I've seen came with the original holster and often with the original manual. They are identical, of course to our Air Force M13s, except they don't say "M13." Getting them stateside can be tricky- my plan used to be having a buddy who was a commercial pilot on flights from Germany to the US. He put the guns in his flight bag and walked on and off the plane with them, but that was before Homeland Security inspected carry ons. I hope your plan works. Know any Diplomats? Ed.

Is there a "legal" way to get one back to the US? I was in Italy a couple years ago, and there was a gun shop in Florence where AI saw a couple nice shotguns. I had no idea how to handle if I could have made the purchase. Most of what I would be interested in are C&R or antique.

Call the ATF office nearest you. I think they told me years ago that it can be done, but your dealer needs to have the right international import license.

There may well be a tax, based on the trade status of the nations involved. I think it used to cost a 55% tax to import a CZ-75 when the Czechs were still a commie country. But if the dealer selling the gun was in Canada or West Germany, you could import them.

The Swedish guns were a standard model 12 with alloy frame stamped with 3 crowns and shipped in 1958.

This Swedish AF Aircrewman sold recently at a US auction for $1755 plus buyer's premium. Serial is C815268.

Importing firearms is tedious but not impossible. Find a dealer with experience and the proper licensing, like Joe Salter, and he can handle the whole transaction for you. Not cheap, but for a special gun a worthwhile endeavor.
