I own the new version of the Model 27 (27-9) with a 6.5in barrel. It has the barrel insert. If I wanted a 4" barrel instead of the 6.5", could Smith do this by just putting on a new barrel rather than cutting down the existing barrel?
Thanks!

I was not aware that S&W had gone to the multi-piece barrel system on the Model 27. You can contact S&W regarding a barrel swap, odds are they will do it through their custom shop. Swapping a barrel is usually less expensive than cutting a barrel and milling the barrel rib for a new front sight.

I thought the new 27 barrel is one piece. However, I've already been wrong twice this morning and I am still on my first cup of coffee. :D

As long as the engineering revision in question is current and offered in a 4" then a barrel swap is no big deal

Up until the -8 engineering revision the Model 27 is absolutely a one piece barrel. I am not too positive beyond that

I am not sure what engineering revision my 75th Anniversary is. I need to figure out where it is and look at it

I suspect a barrel swap as the only option that Smith would offer.
I don't think they would shorten a barrel, especially on a late model.
If they have actually have an uncommitted barrel, may be another story.

I'm looking at my 27-9, 4". I can't tell if it's one piece or two. I looked at my 629-6 and I can't tell any difference, except at both muzzles' ends there's a slight ridge on both that I can feel with my finger nail. Is that the two piece barrel I feel?
This is poking at my curiosity.

This is what the S&W 2-piece barrel looks like.
