SWS Brass Deflector is now available

That is no joke, things always take longer than you anticipate and lead times are constantly changing.

Yup and the wonderful "surprises" you encounter when you receive the sample....or worse, the full order.

I tip my hat to you. Great design and turning it around was pretty quick IMHO!

That has happen a couple of times with a few of the parts for the deflector in the previous design. But the shops have always made it up to me so I can't get to upset about it.

Thanks for the kind words!

Just checked my email and the prototype deflectors are being shipped out!!!

Once I have these in hand sometime next week I will be conducting some tests and then I will be sending out some PM's for testing.

Thank you for the update. Hopefully I get picked to test out the new generation never got picked to do anything testing wise.

The project is far from being dead.

I have been testing out the new prototypes and I will be sending some out for testing later this week.

I am new to the forum and the 15-22, I have alot of experience shooting AR rifles. Being a lefty I found out the first time out that this rifle likes to put hot brass on my right arm, most of it didn't bother me but the one that landed and stayed hurt like hell. Anyways if you need another tester keep me in mind, I am stocked up on 22lr.

any plans for a flip to the side version or mod for existing owners ?

the reason I ask is what do I use for an open chamber indicator with the deflector in place ?

my 3x magnifier has a funky flip to side function, so perhaps we could have a similar mount for the deflector ... otherwise I guess I'll be using a shoe lace or cable tie as a ghetto safety indicator

cheers

A popsicle stick fits through the slots nicely ...

Range Report!

I'd been promising myself a range trip for a while now, and was packing my guns when the new prototypes arrived for testing. So along they came. The guns I used are a pair of 15-22's one mostly stock and the other very modified. Both receivers and the barrel and BCG are the only stock parts on that one. The ammo I used was Rem Golden Bullet and Federal Automatch. I had a fresh brick of the Rem and about 100 rounds of the Federal. Both guns were relatively clean at least when I started. I corrected that. :D

When I got to the range I I put one of the flat shields on the modified 15-22 since it still had the flat mount on it. I fired one magazine slowly and had one bounceback which was an improvement over the old version. I tried another magazine firing quickly and had 2 bouncebacks. I mounted the other flat shield and had pretty much the same results. One with slow fire and 3 with fast. I wasn't really optimistic about the flat shields so I didn't take much time with them. I've always believed having the brass hit an angled shield was the key here.

I took both guns out and put the 25 degree mount and shield on the stock one and the 45 degree mount and shield in the modified one. I took the stock gun and slow fired a 32 round magazine and not a hint of a problem. I then fired 2 more magazines through it as fast as I could pull the trigger. Not a single problem. I gave that gun a rest and loaded up a magazine into the modified one. The first dozen or so rounds slowly them finished the magazine as fast as I could pull the trigger. Perfect. At that point I decided to give it the real test. I released the pin on my Slidefire and dumped 4 magazines downrange. One misfeed but that was the fault of a magazine I'd already tagged as possibly having problems. No bouncebacks whatsoever. I set that gun down to cool and proceeded to play with an AR I bought a few months back and have been itching to get some trigger time on. :D

I went back to the stock 15-22 and put 4 more magazines through it at varying speeds. 3 magazines were Rem ammo and one was Federal. No bounceback issues at all. I put another magazine through the modified one using the Slidefire and then 3 more shooting normally with no bouncebacks. I consider both angled versions a success. I'm supposed to be back at the range tomorrow for something else but plan to shoot both 15-22's again. I'll switch the deflectors around so the 25 degree gets tried with the Slidefire.

The 45 degree lets the brass land 2 to 4 feet directly out the ejection post while the 25 degree holds it a little closer. I had someone who was curious standing next to me while I fired one of the magazines through the modified gun and he was amazed that he wasn't getting showered with my brass. I pointed him to the SWS website after explaining that I was testing prototypes and they weren't out just yet.

I did notice it was a bit hard to put my chamber flags in at the end of the session but it was possible. That's good enough for me.

Overall I'm calling both angled shields a success. I'll post more tomorrow especially if that changed but I don't think it will.

PS I hope you don't want them back. :p

Today I followed in Lorelei's footsteps ... sort of. :)

I took my 10 year old grandson to the range for one last summer shoot before school starts. We had both my 15-22 and his.

I did not bother with the two new 90 degree deflector variants. Based on my experience with the original and the last two variants, I considered it to be a waste of time and ammo. I put the 25 degree deflector on Kinley's rifle and the 45 degree on mine. We each put 200 rounds downrange. Kinley had two bouncebacks in his 200 rounds and I had none in mine. Both of us used a combination of slow and rapid fire. Kinley tends to shoot with the rifle canted to the left, so this may have had some impact on his results.

Given the results we had, I vote for the 45 degree reflector. I wonder if I can hang a little bag on it with a couple of small S-hooks ... :D

I had few minutes to swap deflectors and put the 25 degree on the Slidefire modified gun today. I had 4 magazines with about 110 rounds in them with me. Since I'd already done slow fire I skipped straight to the rapid and Slidefire shooting. I got 2 bouncebacks this time. So not quite as perfect as the 45 degree which has my vote also.

Major I like that idea. We could also put a little mosquito net on it and stand next to a bucket. :D

I wasn't sure if we were suppose to post the results here or in private messages. I pm'd SWS last Friday with my initial results after a couple hundred rounds.

I'm up to 600 rounds now (300 per) with the 25 and 45 degree deflectors and I've only had two bouncebacks, both with the 25 degree plate during rapid fire. The ammo I'm using is CCI Tactical, CCI Blazer, and Federal Bulk.

Now I'm going to test the improved 90* plates with more of the same ammo. The gophers are pretty much down for the year, so I'm back to punching holes in paper and shooting steel.:(

I hope I didn't offend by posting here. I see that now 3 of us have had great success with the 45 degree shield. I'm more convinced now that we have a winner here.

I have had a hunch it would be the 45 degree all along. My home made ( not original with me) deflector consists of a 1.5" long 45 degree rail section with a length of polymer rail ladder attached. Maybe a couple of bounce backs in 6 or 7 thousand rounds. Looked crude, but it works essentially flawlessly.

I am hoping to visit the range Friday morning to test the prototypes. It's getting more difficult to drive, and to hit a target well, but I can still put enough rounds down range to find out which one works best.

Once I do, I will post results here.
