Synthetic Oil Question

I recently switched to synthetic oil (what a difference), and I was wondering if it is safe to switch brands. I have been using Royal Purple for the last 10k miles, and I wanted to start using a synthetic oil for high-mileage engines. Is this advised, or should I stick with the same brand?

Thanks!

Take a peek at "bobistheoilguy.com" -- tons of threads on all lubricants. BITOG has some excellent info (but it takes some searching given the large number of threads).

My 2 cents: no problem in switching to another synthetic. You won't have any issues.

Happy motoring.

Typically,
You'll only have issues when trying to take a high mile motor that's either been run exclusively on mineral oil @ extended change intervals, or a medium mile motor that's been neglected running mineral oil. So, if you've not neglected service intervals allowing dirt to build up around the lips of the engines seals, in the oil control rings, valve guides, etc. you should be fine. Personally, I'd cut the first oil change interval in half at the initial change over. YMMV?

"wow, what a difference" _ In what way? Been a an automotive mechannic for forty years and see no advantage to synthetic over regular petroleum oil as long ass either one is changed regularly with the filter. 400,000 on my Ford Ranger and when torn down there was NO significant wear anywhere! Castrol petroleum based oil and filter every 3000 mi.

There is a difference at temperature extremes. Better cold flow, easier cranking below zero. Petrol based oils could never achieve 0w20. Some new cars and truck only use synthetics, and you will void your warranty using anything else. Switching synthetic brands carries the same risks (if any) as regular oil always has. I've always told customer's to be aware and if their cars seems to use more oil, simply switch back, and this applied to conventional oil as well.

The biggest problem I've seen switching to synthetic on a high mileage engine is creating and/or worsening oil leaks.

When my Tundra v8 was new, I drained the factory oil at about 5k and put in synthetic. Mileage actually dipped a little at the initial mileage check, so I concluded that there was no difference. I still use synthetic.

Yes you can change brands at any time. You can even mix brands as long as they are the same weight. And I highly recommend that you do change brands. Royal Purple is very overpriced for it's very mediocre performance. If you want the best oil available get Amsoil and Amsoil EA series filters. Other than that I would only use Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

" I would only use Mobil 1 Extended Performance. "

+1
I found out about Mobil 1 during a tour in the arctic back in the 70s

had 30+ car's/trucks over the years, some with 300k+ on them.....I just use normal ole oil, change it "around 3K" and thats it......I have NEVER had a single motor apart(knock on wood) never killed a motor. Now in some extreme case there is a benifit, I high temps(maybe) extream use, extream cold.......maybe.

I use good filters, Wix or Napa(wix) or Toyota

spend your money elseware

for me, even if there was a real honest to god improvement....I could never get past the part of running the sin 5-10K before a change...I am to old to change that habbit

right now I have 9 running/lic/reg Land Cruisers(and a chevy)....all but 2 of the cruisers use the same filter, other 2 are the same, 3 kinds of oil in stock and filters for all(many times over)

take that back, got one with an old canister filter(you just change the element)
