Alright fella's, I get it. My 'tone' could be perceived as off in my last thread, geez you guys are touchy. My implications of amateurism was not directed toward anyone in particular and what's wrong with being an amateur? The word implies you do it for the love of it, which IMO loving it should create the desire to always be smoother, faster, with tighter groups. The title of the thread is an old saying that's been bouncing around the military/le courses for years. yes I realize the reason for all the 1913 rails is for customization (ie shooter preference). The sight placement I mentioned doesn't offend me, I'm seriously wondering why folks want the sight there. I'm not trying to catch flies or flak, just trying to tap into this wealth of knowledge.
The 15-22 is a viable training platform for me and has quickly overtaken my 5.56 in range time (less bite out of my wallet). My intent was to create a textbook picture thread for new joins to really stop and think about what they want their rifles to do and how to perform and not waste gobs of cash like I did during my first enlistment. I think everyone could appreciate this.
My 15-22 is set up as closely to my M4 as possible(minus peq-16, acog, BUS), pics for criticism and advise. The first photo is of the day I purchased(04-10). Bi-pod grip bc I had one lying around, cheapo BSA sight bc acog's are pricey. At the time my placement of the bipod grip was much further back than present, hence why I brought it up, after some excellent shooting courses, I saw the error of my ways pertaining to the role my (real)rifle plays and got my off-hand groups much tighter with a grip further forward. You'll also notice my sight is further back. The common thought with my old unit was a sight placement further back for a larger window and unobstructed view, however i now run my sight in line with my magazine well for faster sight picture and more focus on the target and less on the red dot. I don't run BUS's bc I didnt like the sight picture cluttered with the A2 rear sight, but I do have them on my M4; Knight's armament I believe.
So have at it, critique, suggest, curse, do your worst. I have thick skin. Thanks Chattanooga for the insight to your rifle

Took this photo a minute ago. Painted because I developed a nasty habit of doing so. Grip forward, sight forward. Removed the DIY barrel shroud it came with. Other photo is of my MK12 (pre-paintjob) not most ideal, but I made it work. Especially with 77gr. Sierra.

First of all, welcome to the forum! As far as criticism of the set up you have, I don’t think anyone can really say anything because it’s how you personally decided to set up your weapon. I guess it would be more helpful if you stated the purpose of your set up. That way people can relate their experiences to you and apply it to your rig.
I know you said that you set the 15-22 up like your M4, and that is good because you are not just having fun with this gun but you are training with it. Ain’t nothing wrong with that! Ain’t nothing wrong with having fun either.

For me, I’m not in LE nor do I have any military experience. I’ve always liked the AR platform, and the 15-22 gave me a practical introduction to it. I am currently building a real AR though and honestly I don’t see myself decking it out the way I did my 15-22, I don’t really have a reason to as I am not in combat. But famous last words….
The 15-22 for me was really an intro to the AR and also a source or experimentation and fun. It wasn’t born of necessity. But I understand your concern as you are training with it.

I like the paint job! Is the pirate stencil in reference to Spike’s Tactical?

Thanks for the positive response! The stencil is a unit thing. Though I've been impressed with Spike's.

The stencil is really cool and it's all the more better that it has personal significance.

Here is mine, I'm sure you recognize it, lol. But this is the way I've chosen to set mine up. The foregrip feels nice when just holding the gun, but I'm not sold on it for shooting. I do love the red dot more than the iron sights, but I kept both of them on as back up and for co-witnessing. The cheek rest actually does contain some survival gear. But that is another can of worms with the .22. Flash light, really was an impulse but I like it just the same. The dust cover is something I make and I think it improves the look and feel of the gun.

PIGtooth's comment about a BUS is spot on. Especially if you're talking the military issue popsicle stick. I run a Yankee Hill Machine BUS (Model 9680) on my CAR-15 and it's world's better than the GI sight. It folds down very flat and when up, is identical to the A2 rear sight. (I don't have a picture of my CAR-15 handy, need to rectify that.)

Looks good with the barrel left evil black. Ive been toying with the idea of painting my 15-22, but haven't "pulled the trigger" yet. (cuz im a big sissy, and scared i will F' it up)

I like to leave my .223 plain, black and ironed, and "play" with my .22.

Okay, enough talk about the .22 not being a 'real' gun! :D

Do people dis it just because ammo is cheap?

Because it shoots a slower round?

Because it has little recoil?

I am a huge fan of the .22 round! BECAUSE of the above reasons and more. I have shot a lot of weapons in civilian life and military, and they each have their advantages.

But for training and fun, the lowly .22 is a blast. I won't be able to hit targets at 1000 meters with it, but at 100 meters I'll run against any round.... ;)

I'm stuck in traffic right now so I can't post my gun, the current config is on a thread (made A2 front sight) but I have a mako grip that is wide at the bottom feels better and keeps my hand from dripping down. I use the magpul AFG all the way to the front of rail or one past, I have long arms, feels better, like having my thumb on top. It give me more stability. Sights right now I'm using standard rear carry handle A2 and custom front. I have a red dot but have a hard time shooting with it (need riser) the magwell grip is total pimpage, no practical use for me...until zombie squirrel day. Again thanks for your service.

I read the first post that was closed, and now I see this one and have to comment.
It’s my rifle and I will do with it what I dam well please. I do not have to explain why; just because that’s the way I want it.
Hell I just turned 5o yrs. Old so – I DO WHAT I WANT!!!

All I can say is my youngest son a Marine, came home from Afghanistan after spending 7 months in that place. We had a blast shooting my 15-22 with some toys on it. That’s what it is all about.

who ever thinks a .22 rimfire is not a real gun might just be dumb enough to stand in front of its bullet. - if its not real

I bet he didn't say a single derogatory comment about your 15/22 did he? :D

Thank you for your son's service. Without boys like yours, we'd be in sheep dip.

This forum has been invaluable to me, and I would hate to see an issue be perpetuated, driving people away.

Hey, are those new pics on the picture thread?

This is not a 15-22 bashing thread. The previous thread was closed for a reason. Perhaps it should be dropped so we can move on. Post a pic of your rifle with some comments, or comment on one of the posted pics. Pigtooth explained himself, and moved on, so should we.

Also... Nobody is claiming that the 15-22 isnt a "real gun." And nobodys telling you what to do with your rifle.

One of the main reasons why I love this forum is because of the way we treat each other...
