I may have missed it, but what dash ( - ) was your 640? I have a 640-1 that is my EDC, so I'm just curious.

It was a Model 640 357 magnum 5 shot revolver.I do not remember any dash after the model #.The new Model 36 is waiting @ my FFL for it to be recorded on my pistol license and the purchase coupon to be signed by a judge.Anthony was told to tell me the gun was made on June 6th 2012 and that it was rather intensively examined and test fired to make sure it functioned properly.When it does get home I will post pics.Hopefully I will learn to love S+W revolvers again.....Mike

I'm glad they worked witrh you and sent you the gun you wanted. Looking forward to the pics of the 36.

My 640-1 was made in 1996, so hopefully it won't suffer the same fate.

I seriously doubt your 640 will suffer the same fate as my prior two.The odds of this happening once in a person's lifetime is small especially when a 357 Magnum round was never shot out of either gun but to happen twice with the same model gun is akin to being struck by lightning TWICE.The Model 36 looks great and will take a little time for me to comfortably carry it.

Anything made and assembled by man can fail...including S&W revolvers..and $100,000+ cars..and $50,000,000+ jet airliners..I would hope that S&W would rethink how this model revolver is made and correct the problem(s) before somebody loses an eye or worse...I have a friend that bought a new 629 .44 Magnum back in the 1980's that wouldn't fire because the firing pin was hitting between the chamber holes!! S&W fixed it but we all know that weapon was never test fired..a company's product is only as good as the materials and people that assemble it and the quality control procedures in place.

Thank goodness you are little worse for the incident, and please accept my best wishes on healing and getting through what must a pretty unsettling matter. I feel your pain and concern. In light of another incident posted about similar events earlier week, your situation is deja vu all over again x 2. I'll spare everyone the rant I went on last time, and apologize for my lack of understanding of the Forum culture.

I have found that there are some really experienced and brilliant people on this forum, and it's clear a lot wisdom can be found here. Further, I get the reverence for S&W (wow, what a history and I've already bought a new 617 22LRand 686 .357 mag) and the respect, but I'm wondering why there aren't more expressions of well-framed concern and doubt about the quality of S&W products including their safety. There's quite a bit of anecdotal evidence of same across the Forum, but maybe this isn't the place for concerns about general product safety and reliability. Or maybe the gun enthusiast or professional users that gather here prefer that these matters be handled with as little kerfuffle as possible.

I love the Forum; I love S&W revolvers and I find shooting is a great pastime. It also gives me access to another personal safety option should I find myself in difficult straights with mayhem about to descend upon me at the hands of another. I'm pretty agreeable, and I'm still finding my groove here. I'm also patient and tolerant, up to a point, which usually involves safety and quality.

I would be interested if others have things to say about the POV expressed herein.

I will chime in here also! I to believe S&W quality is lacking at least about 6yrs ago for me, I will explain. I ordered a 29 Mtn gun and it showed up with pits in the trigger guard and big ones to,like imperfections in the metal, when I saw it I couldn't believe it had made it out the door like that, S&W did repair but my faith was definatly shaken. I don't know if the pieces were replaced or somehow filled in, the correspondence didn't specify, also the barrel looked to cant to the right so I set a straight edge up and sure enough a slight cant to the right, maybe just a Monday manufacture I don't know but rest assured I will only buy off the shelf now so as to closely examine and be able to set back down and walk away if need be

Yes this is a old story and it took three trips with the replacement Model 36 to replace a Defective Barrel that was seriously canting to the right for them to finally get it right.I just tell people in light of all my bad experiences If you want a S+W revolver contact the good gun sellers,spend the extra money,and buy a old one in good condition because there are major problems with Quality Assurance and being that is the case they aren't worth it
