I have a SD40VE. I love the way it shoots. I'm about to make a new handgun purchase. I want to go with the M&P40 but my mags with my SD40VE rattle awful. Do the M&P mags rattle as bad? Would I be better served with a Glock or XD40??? I have held them in the gun store. Glock doesn't fit my hand as well, doesn't point as nice for me. The Springfield XD40 fits and points good. I don't know a soul who has an XD. I'll probably suck it up and buy the M&P40. I hope I get lucky and get less rattley mags.

I do think my mags rattle ( only because you brought it to my attention) however, I LOVE my FS .40. It shoots true and without fail. My daughters, 16 and 20 yrs old love shooting it. My brother has the exact model you have. He's a wheel gun guy and it's his first semi auto. It took some getting used to for him. Guns are so different though and so are people. He shot his buddies XD 45 and thought it was smoother. I explained that the .40 is a higher pressure round from what I understand and that would likely make up for the difference.
Anyway, I love my FS .40.

I also like my FS40 and would recommend that gun to anyone

Ditto and i don't have a rattle with my mags.
plus you can get a conversion barrel and some mags and shoot 9mm. and if you can afford 357 Sig ammo, just get a 357 Sig barrel and you can use the 40's mags to shoot that too.

so, for under $300 extra, your 40FS can shoot two other calibers of ammo.

What do you mean when you say that the mags rattle in the gun? Do you mean the empty mags rattle in the gun when you shake it or do you mean that loaded mags rattle in the gun when you shake it? I used to have Steyrs. Some people had issues with their ammo rattling in the mags. It ended up being bad/wrong size springs in their mags. Maybe that is the case with your SD40VE? I have a 9c and an 5" Pro. Both in 9mm, and I have never noticed my mags rattling.

SD40VE is a poor representation of a real S&W .40
The SD40VE and the 9mm version were and are an inexpensive entry level hand gun...They are not built to take 1000's of rounds...I see them on the internet here in Utah all the time...For around $279...An M&P 40 is such a better gun than the SD40VE...I was an inch from grabbing an SD9VE, the salesman told me go with the M&P 9mm and I will throw in the tactical kit for $7 more...Done deal...

My first purchase was the S&W Sigma, only because it was cheap. After a few months with the 12 lb. trigger, I bought a M&P .40 via the web, to give it a try. First time out? Like night and day. Like shooting butter. Looked better. Feels better. Shoots better. Is better. The VE stands for value edition. You get what you pay for. You will not regret the upgrade. And the mags do not rattle. Occasional click sound but that is random. Make the move.

By it, (a FS) and a .40c also you will love them! Mags do rattle some but not enough to give you away if you cc. You can use the 15 round mags in the .40c with an xgrip if you so desire.

I really like the SD40VE, that's the reason I'm staying with S&W. I shoot the SD40VE really good. I just want the upgrade.

If I were you, I would be an M&P in 9mm instead of a .40. As to mags rattling, often you see people load them up, then sharply hit them against the palm of the hand to seat everything, eliminating any rattling. I have not had the rattling issue, however, on mags on either the SDVE guns or the M&P guns. It often means that the spring is binding, allowing the cartridges to rattle around because they are not under proper spring tension.

Me thinks you will like the FS better, no slight to the SD40VE.

I recently removed the TS on both guns.

M&P Core Pro

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my M&P CORE Pro... three palm swells... use the largest as I am 6'4" bigger guy. Very tight... no rattles .. shoots amazingly straight... 2000 rounds downrange and NOT ONE issue at all.

I upgraded the trigger as the stock trigger is VERY gritty ... so went to the Apex 2LB competition trigger mod and it is oh so sweet now.

I have the 9MM version and the shorter one for CC. Buy it... you can always sell it back for what you paid as they CORE Pro is very hard to find!!

I have two M&P .40's. One is a full size and the other is a 5" Pro series. Never noticed any rattling. Guns are tight and shoot well and I love them both. I considered Glock. Good gun and reliable but I just can't warm up to the look and feel. I also have a Springfield sub compact .40. It shoots remarkably well especially for a short barrel compact but although small it is bulky for small concealed carry. Definitely not a pocket pistol.

I have an XDm 9mm, 19 round well made magazines. The pistol is extremely accurate. I like the grip safety, like a 1911.
Never jammed or failed to fire. A friend has an XD 40.cal.
When we qualified he put 23 out 24 of rounds into a 3" x 2" grouping. He sent a flyer with the 24th. His fault.

BODYFAITHFUL

I use an M&P .40 4.25" as one of my CCW guns. Excellent gun, no rattles. My wife carries a M&P Shield .40, also an excellent gun. I also carry an XDm .45 3.8". The XD is wide and heavy because it's a double stack mag, but shoots as good or better than my M&P. Lastly, I also carry an FNS .40 4" and in my opinion it's the best of the three. Before you buy go to a gun shop that will let you try them out on the range, you just might save yourself alot of money!

I have three FS M&P.40s, two FS .45s, two FS 9MMs, a 9 Shield and a .40 Shield. The mags don't rattle in any of them. My EDC is the .40 Shield in the winter & the 9MM Shield for spring and summer. Don't have to penetrate a lot of clothing in the warm months. Backup is either a .380 Bodyguard or Sig P238 depending on clothing. Nightstand pistols are the M&P.45s with light and laser. The automobile console piece is a 1911 E Series SC. I am a 1911 guy but these M&Ps are terrific. I find I like the S&W E series 1911s a lot. Just as good if not better than the Colts, Kimbers & Sig 1911s I have. S&W rocks with the life time warranty too. I shoot a lot of different makes of firearms but it's usually a S&W I trust my life with. Enjoy your new M&P .40.
