I'm thinking of picking up a new 686 because I am sorely lacking in the 4" medium frame revolver area. I've never been much of a fan of rubber grips or finger groves, and the new grips that S&W has started using seem especially ugly.

I'm turning to the experts over here to recommend me some wood target style grips to look into. I'm not looking to spend a fortune on grips here, I just want something that sort of mimics a classic target style grip and converts a round butt gun into a square butt. Pictures are also always appreciated :D.

I believe that Kurac (just do a search) makes round to square butt grips. His coke bottle target grips are fantastic. I'm not sure what you'd call a fortune, but they are worth every penny in my opinion.

Kim Ahrends makes a round to square grip. I have these Cordia ones on my 686-4 6", and it's a ***** cat with the hottest .357 loads.

EDIT (added one more):

I have a set of smooth targets (Ahrends) that were bought on ebay for $30 last year. Look good, and fit my hand. I don't think that I could have too many grips! Bob

These are Kim Ahrends 'Retro Targets' in cocobolo:

The bottom one was ordered unfinished - and finished in a homebrew penetrating oil finish, which darkened the wood somewhat. Great handfit. They are both round butt gripframes.

The Ahrends Retro Targets are on the top of my list. I've also been looking really hard at Altamont's Target conversions, which mimick the original grips pretty well and you can get them with the original checkering pattern.

I have a set of Eagles on my 629-6, but they are extremely slick and I don't care for the way the right panel is much thicker than the left. I was just hoping to discover a few more options outthere, and of course get some pictures to stare at.

I really enjoy the Hogue wood monogrips. I have them on my 686 and 29 and they are a lot thinner than stock grips and fit my hands well.

+1 to this. I have a couple pairs and couldn't be happier. Here is my 686 wearing a pair of claro walnut Kurac grips.
