Taurus 85

Well I'm supposed to be trading in my Ruger LCP .380 with a guy this afternoon for his unfired Taurus 85 .38 special 2" in stainless steel. can't hardly contain my excitement. Finally getting me a .38 special. As soon as I get it home, I'll post pictures of it. The only thing that would have made it nicer would be if it was a S&W maybe I can pick me up another S&W revolver later on.

The Taurus 85 is a pretty decent gun. I've fired on before. Not bad at all. Congratulations on your new revolver!

I've had a Tarus 85, an 85 Ultra Lite and a 605 stainless. All three were slightly more accurate than the S&W model 36, 642 Airweight and M-60's I still own. I sold the 605 to a guy who REALLY wanted it and made $100. Both 85's I traded away because of the same issue. The screw assembly which holds the cylinder crane in position is held by less than two full threads. Even with Loctite, the screw loosens. The screw loosens and pops out during a range session. You then lose the screw, a spring and a miniscule plunger rendering the gun useless until fixed. Tuarus won't send you the parts, you must ship the gun back to them. If I ever own another small frame Taurus, I'm going to degrease and red Loctite that screw then put a drop of super glue on top!

The Taurus bashing will soon start, some by people who have never owned one. I have an older Model 85 with a semi-concealed hammer that I have never had a problem with. The fit, finish and function is good.
I looked at a couple of new light weight Model 85's a couple of weeks ago and the only problem that I could see with them was a little too much(for me) cylinder rotational play.

I had a Taurus 85 many years ago, and it was a reliable and reasonably well made gun. I preferred the fit and finish of my S&W's, but the Taurus was more than just fine. I gave mine to my son-in-law so that my daughter's family had at least one firearm in their home for personal defense. I gave it to him with a box of 50 rounds of hollow point about 15 years ago. Recently I asked him how the gun was holding up and he told me he hasn't yet opened the box of ammo nor fired the gun. Oh well.

Congratulations on your new gun. I've never owned that model but have had three Taurus revolvers and all worked very well. No they're not a S&W but my experience has been positive with them.

I have a Taurus 85, I bought it used in the early 90's.

I never sold it even though I have had offers.

It's surprising how much heavier it is than my EDC (LCR).

But, I like it. Easy to shoot, looks good.

I had a Taurus 85 years ago. Good gun. I traded it off for something else, I've forgotten what.

I had a SS Taurus 357 snubby. It was okay. Not near as tight as a smith though. I traded it awhile ago for a Henry Golden Boy and I'm pleased with the trade.

I have many S&W .38s, and one lonely Taurus 85. Got it in a trade deal that included other guns. This one is fancied up a little and has a ported barrel. It's ok, not one of my favorites, but it handles well, shoots decent and is fairly well put together. My Son wants it, so it will most likely move on.

Well I did the trade, and the only thing that I'm not happy about was the fact it was a 5 hour trip there & back, didn't help that traffic was completely blocked on the interstate with no movement at all for 45 minutes on the way there. Now I just have to get it to a range and try it out. Here's a couple pictures of it.

Well, good luck. Report back when you've shot it a bit. I'd watch out for that screw and spring mentioned by a poster above.

It's very poor engineering to make a screw with just two threads.

I'll take a .38 over a .380 anytime. And having a basic gun gives you something to trade up for later.

I have no problem with a .380.......my only problem was due to the small size and extremely light weight (12oz loaded) it had quite a bit of recoil and wasn't much fun to shoot......great for conceal carry but not good for recoil.......and i wanted something different and always have wanted a .38 or .357 so decided since i could work the deal to go ahead and do it.

I purchased a Taurus 85 for my first revolver because the price was right at Cabelas, but the trigger sticks and is sloppy. I has only shot it for two range sessions,but I am looking to get something else.Perhaps the S&W.
