I have a G2C semi auto in 40, and may get a new G3C in 9mm with the optics cut/plate, so I am moderately familiar with Taurus in general.

I am interested in possibly getting a Taurus 44 magnum revolver, as my brother-in-law has a revolver in 44 spl, and we will be getting dies anyway.

How is their quality for the most part? I understand at their price point that fit and finish won't be up there like a vintage Ruger or Smith, but for a shooter in stainless, are they reasonably trouble-free? It won't be a self defense concealed carry, so if I need to send it off to Taurus because of an issue, I won't have been relying on it, nor will I be stuck without a firearm, so that isn't an issue. The features at the $550 out the door shipping/taxes/transfer fee all in range are pretty much a steal. 4" stainless, ported, and I can load with low flash powder. springs and shims are available for the triggers as well, if necessary.

Thoughts?

I've had three Taurus handguns in my life, still own a small 38 revolver. And I've had zero issues with any of them. Are they top of the line in fit and finish ? NO Are they going to win any beauty contests ? NO

Would I choose a Taurus handgun if I could only have one handgun ? NO

But they're just fine as fun gun shooters that don't break the bank. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase as Taurus for that.

I've owned Taurus guns for many years and have never been disappointed. I currently have a Model 605 .357 that equals any S&W of its type. There is certainly nothing at their price point that equals them right now.

I think Taurus makes better revolvers for the last 15 years than S&W has been doing. And I am a big S&W guy; almost all of mine are 20 years or older.
My favorite CCW center fire revolver is a 5-shot Model 85 Ultralite in .38 Special, and I plan to buy another one. The double-action trigger pull is smoother and lighter on my out of the box Taurus, and others I have tested, than any of my J frames could ever have, even with switching out springs and polishing, which can cause misfires.
S&W has had problems with QC failures such as badly clocked barrels and excessive barrel-cylinder gaps. Obvious flaws that could have been easily caught if someone at the factory had taken 15 seconds to actually look at the guns, even at arms length.
I would have already gotten one of the Taurus .44 Magnums but I don’t like the ported barrels.
Do not be afraid of getting a Taurus.

Right now there's not a lot of difference in the quality of a Taurus and a S&W . Not when you factor in the cost difference .

I have owned a stainless Taurus 992 Tracker 9 shot 22 WMR with extra 22 LR cylinder for about 12 years now with many rounds fired of both 22 magnum and 22 LR. It has been very accurate, reliable and fun to shoot. I feel the quality is similiar to current production S&W revolvers. Even though it’s my only Taurus gun, it’s one of my most used revolvers and I would recommend them.

Add me to the list of people who have owned a number of Taurus revolvers over the years and have never been disappointed with any of them. Some, maybe most, have rivaled Smith and Wesson in fit and finish, and I shot them just as well.

My last one was a Tracker 44, Magnum, with a 4" ported barrel. That particular gun had a beautiful blue finish, the only Tracker I've seen with a blue finish. It was about the size of a K-frame S&W, for five shots. It even had a very good trigger. I tried a handful of actual 44 magnums and it was an eye opener. With 44 Specials it was great. I only traded it off when a nice, 4", 29-10 came along. It too only sees Specials, but I don't shoot anything but paper.

One other thing about that Tracker, which sounds like the one you're talking about. It had the Taurus "Ribber" grips, which were OK with 44 Specials, but I put a Hogue grip on it and liked the gun even more.

Taurus customer service and warranty lead times are c-r-a-p. Taurus STILL has quality control issues just not anywhere near the same levels as before. That said, it may take several months for warranty repairs as the almost always are out of stock of spare parts, so they have to wait for shipments to come in from Brazil. Then that leads me to the second issue which is, unlike S&W revolvers, Taurus has a corporate policy to NOT sell most spare parts to their customers. They will force you to send your gun in for even a simple DIY part replacement, and will REFUSE to sell you the part.

My post was about the comparison of quality of the two brands .

I own several Taurus handguns and have NEVER been refused buying spare parts. Simply go to the store tab on their website and order the parts you need for which ever model you have.

I don't currently own any Taurus products, but I have in the past and never had any issues with them. I wouldn't be afraid to buy another. Especially their revolvers.
