We just completed our Federal taxes. We used the H&R Block at Home program and it could not have been easier. Took less than an hour to complete. It even submits the return to the government with direct deposit of the refund to our checking account. Last year we used this same program and our refund came in less than a week. I understand Turbo Tax is the same type of program and works as well as H&R. If your return isn't a complicated one you might want to look at doing your taxes with an on-line program (we file our state return by paper because it's only 2 pages and not worth another $ 20.00, which is the cost of the basic program).

When I was on my own I used Taxact which worked quite well. For $10.00 (cost of the state module) it's a LOT cheaper if your return is simple. If you download the same program next year, it will import all of the info from the prior year and all you have to do is enter the dollar amounts.
Help from a Tax man.

I use Turbo Tax, a little pricy but well worth it if you have anything other than wages to report.

I havent even gotten all my 1099's, W2s ect...

I will still be dealing with this until September 15th...

I've been using FreeTaxUSA for years, doesn't cost me a thing, goes quickly, and the refund shows up in my bank account in ten days or less. Hard to be Free!

I use to use Turbo Tax Pro as I had a sideline Tax Business. It was the best I've found.

However now, all I have is my pensions and not enough deductions to use Sch A.

I go to the IRS website and use their fill out forms. Easy, doesn't cost anything and you can also file electronicaly.

I always did ours the paper way. Now we buy the Turbo tax and do ours, kids and fiance . Main advantage is the e filing as mentioned, there is no charge and super fast.

freetaxusa.com

an other vote for them . i have done it for 3 yrs. and it walks u thru every steps .
all you end up paying for is the stat taxes at $9.95 !

Since I never receive anything back and always pay.

I still use the paper method and just make sure it is postmarked April 14 2359 hrs.:D

My wife and I still do ours the old fasion way and both our personal and business ones went out Two weeks ago.:D

I
haven't received all my W2s or 1099s as of yet either.
By law they should be mailed by Feb. 1.
Time to light a fire under someone's rear.

I am stubborn, and refuse to pay for a computer program to allow me to pay taxes. I pick up the forms at the library, fill them out, and mail them in. If I ever get to the point I'm unable to do them myself, I'm going to jail I suppose.

I've used H&R Block for the past few years. Dang, they are expensive for a basic itemized return!
This year I logged in to TurboTax online. What a simple method and inexpense too. Took about 45 minutes, walks trough all the questions with ease. Free E-File and verification emails stating Feds and State accepted the return filing.

Mickey D 'Likes' this.

The wife and I have used H&R for years, always the same woman, retired CPA. Now she has retired from H&R so we hunted her down at home and talked her into doing them.:D

She is really good and knows our weirdness. We both work out of town in different states so we have some strange things going on. Most of the time we don't have time to do them, it's hard enough to get all our stuff together and in her office. We then have to make an appointment and drive or fly in to go over everything.
I've been traveling since 1985 and I'm getting tired of it.:(

I have used Turbo Tax for personal and small business for a couple years, not in jail yet, must be pretty accurate.

I haven't gotten one of those tax books they sent out until last year, with all the instructions and the forms they think you'll need.

Are those now a thing of the past?

Can I still get forms at the post office or library, or print them off of an IRS site? I do my own taxes.

Just make a request from the IRS, they will send you the forms and instruction booklet. I started doing this last year when they stopped mailing them.

I wish my taxes were simple enough to plug into an internet program. :( If I say anything more on the subject, it's likely to become political.

I do mine the easy way. I take everything to the CPA and let him get the headaches. He files my quarterly federal corporate taxes, year end federal corporate taxes, state quarterly taxes, state year end annual report and year end personal taxes. All of this comes to about $2500 per year. It is well worth it to me. I do what I do best and let the CPA do what he does best.

The Lovely and Charming has always handled getting all of our paperwork to the CPA who has done an excellent job for us. This year, for the first time, I'm going to have to take a week, travel across country so I can organize all Mom's paper work and get to her CPA. I love her dearly but I'm not looking forward to the new responsibility

If you don't need a CPA, you are probably not working hard enough to support the ones that don't pay taxes.
