A distraction is a distraction. I agree that using a cell phone while driving is dangerous, but no more so than other generally accepted activities. Many states allow talking on a cellphone while driving sans Bluetooth, but prohibit texting or other distracted driving, which is rarely enforced.

I think every motor vehicle using public roads should have an operating cellphone jammer that activates when the car is moving and deliberately deactivating it should be an offense with penalty of forfeiture of the vehicle. This regulation should apply to ALL vehicles, specifically including “public safety”/emergency vehicles. No exclusions.

Yes, I realize this would be tough to enforce, AND very unpopular.

OK, I realize there's more than a hint of sarcasm in this... but really? There's absolutely *no* good reason to be able to make a call from a moving vehicle? Offhand, I can think of at least three:

1) Emergency transport of a person to hospital (and for those who think you should wait for an ambulance, try living in a rural area.)
2) Road rage victim. BTDT. Would have loved to have my current car with voice-activated calling that night.
3) Reporting drunk/impaired driver. (OK, you might be able to pull off the road for this one... but recent experience on I-75 to Miami suggests otherwise.)

I agree Farmer17 . There's just no way you can carry on a conversation , and concentrate on what you're talking about , and drive at the same time . Our brains aren't wired that way . I told my wife , and she's worked for AT&T 35 years , cell phones will be the down fall of civilization .

Georgia enacted this year a "hands free" law. If you're holding
cell in your hand, you're wrong. A friend recently told me that
a deputy told him the tariff on that violation is $900...
supposedly to "send a message" and raise awareness.

Turn it up. Fade the speakers and add some bottom. Crank up some Ozzy.

Information you need while driving, Water temp. Oil pressure, Volts or Amps, gas gage and a speedometer to keep the law off of you. Open the windows and hear what's going with your surroundings.

I'm guilty as hell about all of the above but truth is what it is.

There seem to be more going on in the cab than out these days and we need situational awareness more so every day.

Well I guess I'll be blasted but quite honestly I don't have any problem making a quick phone call while driving down the highway or walking and chewing gum. I have power steering and auto transmission and I'm looking straight ahead and checking my mirrors while others not on their phone are looking at the stores, addresses, sun sets, clouds, or hot babes.

I agree with Farmer17. I make a call and still focus on the road. I'm more of a distraction when I'm looking at deer or turkeys in fields

Pre-cellphones I had passengers who would get cranky because I wouldn't look at them while I was driving, or would stop in the middle of what I was saying to concentrate getting out of a flaky junction. Tough.

Do that on a phone and the person at the other end will have a fit, and it doesn't have to be on a cell in a car. That's why a handsfree is only marginally less distracting than holding the phone. With a CB it's entirely different. The person with the key down has TOTAL control of the conversation, and if they pause it to do some driving, there is NOTHING the other party can do about it.

We all agree that we got along fine without cell phones for many years don't we ? I still do. I doubt that I spend more than 20 minutes a year on a cell phone. And never when I'm driving. Nobody is so important that they can't be out of touch for more than a minute at a time.

I left home this past weekend to run an errand and realized when I was about 15 minutes out that I left my cell phone laying on the kitchen table. I was gone for a couple of hours . . . and it was kinda refreshing.

Every cell phone should be equipped with an accelerometer which detects motion. If the detected motion is greater than 10 mph, the phone shuts down. Also prevents annoying conversations on public transportation!
