I was at my local dealer today and spotted a couple of real nice S&W semi-autos. I've never owned one before.

She had two Model 41s, both NIB. One had a long slide with a ported compensator on the end, S/N A484593. The other looked like it had a 5" barrel and no compensator. It's SN was A193946.

I really liked the look of the long slide. They were priced the same.

I'm not home right now, so I don't have access to my Supica book. Could y'all help me out here with dates, values and whatnot.

Thanks.

The 7 3/8 inch barreled model was made in 1978 and may or may not have the cocking indiactor as that is the year they were dropped. The cocking indicator on the rear of the slide adds value to the gun to many people who buy them. The 5 1/2 inch barreled Model 41 was made in 1973/1974 and should have the cocking indicator. I prefer the 7 3/8 barreled model with the compensator myself and I have both.

Thanks Fyimo. Those are the two that my dealer has. For those particular two, being NIB, what would the approx. value be? The longer one sure does have a unique look to it. It's got to be very tame to shoot.

The Comp was dropped long ago (1978) and the current long barrel is a 7”. The cocking indicator went away about the same time.
I have an assortment of barrels and prefer the 5-1/2 ” bull barrels myself. Barrel flip with either is negligible. My old barrel with comp sadly lies in a drawer. I am told that the shorter barrels out sell the longer by 2 or 3 to 1.
Neither of the barrels if original should be drilled and taped for a rail that happened about 1994. Many of us have optics of one kind or another on our 41s, that requires D&T.

I don't have much idea about values for these guns if they are NIB.
SCS&W says LNIB about $1000. I personally wouldn't pay that much, new ones can be had for less. I like cocking indicators and so do many others. But I also like the pre "A" serials.

I bought both of mine last year and prices have softened since then and I paid $850 for the 7 3/8 barrel and $950 for the 5 1/2 inch which is a 1980 and appeared unfired and it came with the box and paperwork.

I shoot the crap out of my long barrel because it was used a lot before I bought it and the only thing I did to it was put in a new recoil spring. It functioned fine before I did that but it does eject better now as the original spring was way shorter then the stock replacement spring.

I'm sure the 5 1/2 inch is a great shooter and quite frankly 22LR pistols have almost no muzzle flip to begin with. The compensator does minimize what little recoil there is but is probably unnecessary.

I'd buy the one that you like the best and then shoot the crap out of it when you get it because they are a blast to shoot.

Here's my 1978 Model 41 that I got for $700.00 locally. It's an "A" prefix and has the cocking indicator. I love this gun and I highly recommend you buy one or both. :)

I'd like to get a newer 7" barrel that's already drilled and tapped so that I can install a nice quality red dot.

I've got the long-barreled version with the compensator and cocking indicator, mine is circa '70-'71. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but hope to Saturday. It is just an awesome piece of equipment. The only problem is I want a 5" to go with it :D

Thanks for the reply guys. I'll pass on the ones at my dealers. They want $1595 each plus tax.

I'll try to find one elsewhere.

I agree $1595 is way out of line. If you search a bit you can find a new one for a few $$ over 900. I don’t think either of those 70’s era pistols fall into any highly collectable category. Since it’s hard to wear one out, most older 41’s hold their value well but I would think the market is around $700-800 at least around these parts.

i have a mod 41 ser # 18xxx it also has the cocking pin
smith says it was made in 1952
even though someone tried to shoot out a bullet about 2" into the bbl it shoots a lot better than i can hold it

they are very good guns and new ones today wholesale for about $850!

I purchased a 7" model back about 84 and found a S&W listed accessory at Gil Hebard guns, a 5" field barrel, which is profiled like the longer barrel, but with a red ramp front sight. That combo makes for a delightful little field/plinking pistol.

Well, I'd keep those guns in mind and look around. For sure a NIB A prefix gun is going to be north of a grand unless lady luck deals you an Ace (and I don't mean a Service Ace). Seems to me somewhere around 1200 would be representative of what I am seeing. You can do better on price if you are looking for a clean gun to shoot and are not particularly concerned with a 100 percent gun, box and papers. I have the 7"+ and 5.5" versions and like them both, but prefer the 5.5" if I am looking for something handy.

You'll know when you see the right one(s). They will call to you.

Happy hunting.

Scott

I purchased a new production 7" last fall for $970. I bought a mount from bullseye gear.com and put a new Matchdot II on it. I feed it CCI standard velocity and this pistol is a tack driving laser. I'll be shooting it this coming outdoor season in the bullseye matches. Don't hesitate to get a new production model, the quality is there still.

Yeah, that's crazy money; like another poster said $1595 for both and there you have it. These are more like $1k guns or less even NIB, maybe a bit more for the comp model since they seem to command more money.

I just picked up a 1997 model that wasn't shot much and it had just come back from Smith with a new 7" barrel for $775 and it's awesome, what a gun!

Good luck on your search!
