Hello all. I never post on this forum, but I'm not new to firearms or forums...

I picked up this Performance Center 629-5 a few years ago from a friend who needed cash. The revolver did not come with a box or any supporting documentation. Beyond the basics I don't know much about what I have. I can't find anything in the S&W catalog that's similar. The only info I have found is an older thread on here - Performance Center 629-5 Info

Can anyone confirm that this is indeed an early 629-5 Hunter? If so, any idea what year it might have been made? It's got a two digit HMR00XX serial number. The thread linked to above doesn't really give any useful guidance on value, that's something I am very curious about; looking at old GB sales is not the best IMO.

Welcome to the forum. I read the forum link provided and it looks to me that all the info you need is there. Apparently a small run intended for distribution in Europe. Jughead's value estimate is pretty spot on for a pre-lock PC gun. The main thing that'll hurt the value of yours is the lack of original box & papers. I would side on post 4 referring to the gun as a Hunter II, not a 44 Magnum Hunter as I own 2 versions of that gun and neither has a weighted barrel. That's all I got. Maybe someone smarter than me will chime in.

I'm with 75Vette...I'd go with Hunter II...

Here's mine...looks like yours.

Thanks for the info guys; I can finally say with confidence what I have and roughly what it is worth.

Now I just have to decide if I want to keep it or sell it.

I had no idea, learning something new every day. They're the grips that came with the gun, but they do look good.
The Altamont grip is the correct factory supplied grip on your -5 engineering revision 629 revolver.

Here is one of my 629s from the -5 era wearing the same factory supplied grips

The engineering revision, or dash number, will be stamped into the frame, just open the cylinder and you will see 629-x

Give Smith and Wesson a telephone call and provide them your serial number. They will be able to tell you the product code (SKU) of revolver and the date of manufacture

Once you have the six digit product code, you can look your revolver up in the SCSW

His valuation was good for 2017 not so much in 2018/19. As of now you're probably looking at a ceiling of 12-1300 for that gun without a labeled box. The market for PC guns has cratered over the past year and a half.

Unfortunately, the value of everything has taken a hit since 2017. I want to cut my collection in half, but it seems like I can't give stuff away right now.

That's true unfortunately, good for buyers looking for deals to fill their collections, not so good for sellers. As always there are exceptions but the current trend line is down for most things firearm related. Your best bet to sell, especially if you have a few guns to sell, is to get them consigned with a good online seller who charges a minimal percentage of the sale but consistently gets above market prices for his listings. I'll point you to a member of our forum jjbrewst1 (sarah15 on Gunbroker) but there are others that do it too. Feel free to PM him on here if you decide to sell.

Thanks for the reference, but I've been buying/selling for over a decade (mostly AR 15 and semi-auto stuff) and have a pretty good handle on things, and I'm an FFL. It doesn't make much sense for me to take even more of a hit paying someone else a cut.
