Greetings all,
good to meet you. I started out on the 'imports' and have gradually started to gather up a few of the 'all americans'. The 4506 is an impressive piece. Accurate, sturdy, manly, but not quite 100 % reliable. It seems that my 4506 extractor is offset a mite, or perhaps a bit thin in the hook. It does not seem to entirely grab the case rim.

At the S & W homepage I found 4516 extractors for sale in three models; S, regular, and L, I believe. What is the difference? Are these extractors also used on the 4506? Except for the extraction problem this would be a really awesome piece. TIA, K.

The 4506 has a 5 inch barrel and I believe the 4516 is a 3.75. Just call S&W and send it back to them on their dime, you should get it back within a week or two.

S&W tends to take good care of critical part problems like ejectors and extractors, regardless of how many owners the pistol has had. I would let them know about it first.

Thanks for the replies. Numrich is currently showing "sold out", though the price is reasonable. I would prefer to have a local switch out the extractor if I can get a-hold of one... A local GS put in a Wolff power extractor and it seemed to work for about 200 rds. I was really bummed at the steel challenge at having to shoot a 'single shot'.

Ask S&W to send you a shipping label (they pay for shipping) and you can send it back, have it fixed properly and put a note in with it telling them to look over the whole gun and bring it back to original factory spec, replacing any parts that any previous owner "improved" through use of a file or dremel tool.

Any chance your problem is your magazine?
The black follower magazines replaced
the yellow and orange followers.
My 4506 only had a problem with an old yellow magazine I inherited.
