So here I am minding my own business running some errands and stop in a local gun shop that I havent been to in quite a while. They actually had a couple of Smiths,
a 2.5" model 66,,,, for 475, It's on my list, But this one has not P&R, And a 629-2E in 3" for 7 bills. Left it, Already have one, But I am still on the fence about that one,,,
And then there's this AMT Automag III in 30 Carbine with a 6+" barrel and one missing grips screw (where can I get one?)
Anyway I knew these existed but never saw one in real life,, Yet I wanted one,,,,, So I bought it home for a cleaning.... All looks like new now, Still have a bum hand from the crushing nearly 3 weeks ago, But am hoping to squeeze off a few rounds in the next fer days.
What can you tell me about these buggers.
I havent found too much info on them except that "Big sound and muzzle flash)
And something like 1600 FPS out of this Automag.
Not sure if I will be keeping it just yet
But seems like an interesting toy.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Very high pitched report.
There are better powders to use than the GI loading intended for an 18" barrel. But the GI stuff are pretty spectacular at an indoor range!
It's bark is far worse than it's bite from the shooters perspective. You may love it, or hate it. It usually only takes about 15-20 rounds to determine which it'll be? I never got one when they were being produced, as I already had a S/R Blackhawk in the loading. A friend back in Chicago had one, his didn't like to go fully into battery with sloppily executed hand loads. Stay on top of sizing and OAL. She'll do better with brass dedicated to her.

Have one and it works well!

My reloads were with AA#9 and also worked well. BIG MUZZLE FLASH and loud.

Be careful when disassembling as there is a small pin in the recoil rod, the delay pin and it will hop out and disappear in the shag carpeting.(don't ask how I know)

My automag II had a "break in period" and jammed a lot. The previous owner of my III had the same problem. Both now shoot w/out a problem. YMMV

I was in the next lane to one in an indoor range back in the 80's when they came out. We had to stop shooting when he did due to the loudest report I've ever heard from a handgun. Plus the muzzle flash was spectacular

Agree with feeding problems.Ended up sending 2 back, never could get one to fire any two mags of any ammo without a jam.
Was definitely a flamethrower.
Better luck with yours!
