Tell me why I should not buy the 640 Pro?

If you don't mind spending the extra money on the 640 Pro, go for it. I just picked up a PC642 that has a much better trigger than my earlier 642. The PC model also comes with moon clips, good shock absorbing grips, and some nice polished metal touches. It comes with a price tag of a bit less than $500. Check the trigger pull out for yourself. You might just find the PC to be more to your liking. If you're not concerned about weight and think you need .357 magnum capability, go for the 640 Pro. It sure wouldn't hurt to have both revolvers in your lineup. I've looked at it myself, but decided my 66 snubby filled that role.

I also have 2 Kimber K6Ss. One is a 2" and the other a 3". I like them both and the fact that they hold 6 rather than 5, in a similar size/weight package, is a big plus. But I have to say that I like the 640 Pro a little better, if I had to give up two I'd keep the Pro.

I would like to have one but the one I found had a canted barrel. Check the workmanship. If it looks right buy it.

Although I'm very happy with my S&W M&P 340 which I added the S&W crimson trace grips too. It's ALWAYS in a pocket even when I carry my S&W 21-4.

May I respectfully say that you are at the wrong forum for such a question.If you want an honest answer,go to the''wifes of multiple S&W gun owners'' site.They'll give you reasons why not to buy another Smith.

Those grips are sweet on my 649-3 and come in red or green laser. I chose green and don't regret it. VERY comfortable. I wanted a 640Pro and had one on order locally for 2 years about 4 years ago, finally gave up. Not buying a new Smith Revolver without seeing it. There ya go, $.02 worth!

They are LG350's from Crimson Trace. Green laser, very nice reduction in felt recoil, fill the hand making the gun easy to control. Not great at reducing the overall size of the gun. Pricey, but if you are a NRA certified RSO or Instructor, a copy of your credentials will get you a substantial discount.

I don't think you can go wrong with any version of the 640. I think one could argue that the 640 is the cream of the crop for a carry J frame. Although the airweights might be better for pocket carry.

If you have money for the extra's the Pro gives you, more power to you.

I carry a 442 and would really like a steel J frame some day.

I love mine for all the above reasons and it has no IL. For me it looks and feels more like an old school Smith; I also like the flexibility of carrying .38s or magnums. I actually carry 4 +Ps and a magnum for the last shot.

Where did you get those stocks? I like them. And I don't think I've seen them on the smith and wesson website.

Well I went back today and they still had the 640 PRO in the back that I played with last week that started this thread. And of course after much deliberating with myself, I caved and got the gun. The trigger was just really smooth for me not to take it home. Plus the extras that you get with this gun like, all stainless, no lock, night sights, moon clips, fluted barrel, 357 capability and more i just could not pass it up. Plus, I talked them down to $700.00 plus tax which with tax brought it right back up to $749.00 OTD but I am happy... I would have paid the same amount if I ordered off the web but would not have been able to play with it and see what the trigger felt like and how it was built prior to shipping to my FFL. Thanks to everyone that "helped" me decide, the pics of yours did it and some of you had good points as to why the gun is a superb J frame..

Now, I am looking at altamont grips for it I think ... Here she is....

Congratulations! I bought my 640 Pro a few months ago. I don't think the trigger pull is any better than my old 642, but the 640 Pro is much more pleasant to shoot. I'm not particularly averse to recoil, especially on small guns, but I find even full house .357 loads are tolerable in the 640.

thanks hyena, now I am trying to decide on what altamont grips to get for my pro and 642. gonna cost me over 100 bucks for 2 pair of them.

Do any of you know if the altamont grips come with a speed loader cut already in the left side or do you have to specify this when you order them? Thanks...

What is nice about having the airweight and an all steel version is the ability to put in a lot of range time shooting a short barreled revolver.

Here's the progression I went through (I've never pulled the trigger on any J-frame with those out-of-the-box rubbers).

The Altamonts were comfortable, but the Karl Nill grips make them obsolete. Can't say about the speed loader access with the Altamonts, but they do allow for moon clips on the 640 Pro.
