The best carry J Frame

J frame, for me anyway, is pocket or ankle carry only. The minute you go inside the waistband, you can carry a K frame just as easily and shoot it WAY better. So the 649 Bodyguard has a place...in the pocket. It is the gun I carry when I can't carry a gun. The ankle carry is even worse, but with a Galco Ankle Glove it is at least comfortable...and I will concede if you sit in an office all day the ankle carry works. But for carry? The J frame Bodyguard is the pocket king!

I was gonna buy a 438 but everyone I ever saw had the Hilary hole on the side so I never bought one.

I don’t think they ever made a 638 without the Hillary hole. I wanted the 438 because of the black finish I find it holds up better than the silver finish on all their other J frames.

Here are a pair of mine...for concealed carry it's the M60 with Speer GD +P .38 Specials. The 3" bbl, with 'Special' length cartridges really helps with ejection, and the slightly longer bbl. adds to its accuracy. The M63 is my practice piece...cheap, with the same length bbl. it's a good training and general fun gun.

I'm an OWB guy, have been since 1970...and carry at the old FBI 3-4 o'clock position. Fifty four years of reaching back equates to a lot of muscle memory. Those are two of the holsters I made up for carry. Now if I could only remember what I was supposed to pick up at Kroger.....

Best regards, Rod

This is a great gun, probably the nicest J frame Smith & Wesson makes. Yes 12 or 13 ounces is great to carry but you still might have to shoot the thing. And 22 ounces is not exactly a horse. My only complain about this, and really all J frames, is it that little trigger seems to disappear into the frame when I pull the trigger, AND pinches my finger quite often too. Why can’t they make a trigger that sits a little further forward, or is a little deeper/ thicker front to back, maybe a little wider too. Anybody else have this problem, or if not a problem kind of a pet peave?

I like all J-frames but my all time favorite model is the 649, 638 humpback.

What is the allure of the humpbacks? They are some of the ugliest revolvers ever made. Even worse than the Ruger LCR’s.
I will admit I have a Ruger LCR hammerless in .22 LR, which I refer to as my Planet of the Apes Gun.
It is UGLY.

Best of both worlds. Won't snag like an exposed hammer for pocket carry, still allows the gun to be cocked for single action unlike bobbed, or hammers.
