Ten Guns that Should be in Every Collection

I started to think about it…but then my head hurt. 10 different categories was all I could muster:

Carry gun
Plinking gun
Hunting shotgun
Hunting rifle
Defense shotgun
Target gun
Long range target gun
House gun
Truck gun
BBQ gun

Many good examples listed!!
But you all are light on the SMG's
Gotta have an MP5 or recent variant to round things out.

I would agree with this list but have a few deviations:

1. S&W Pre-model 29 .44 Magnum N frame
2. S&W Pre-model 10 .38 special K frame
3. Colt SAA .45LC
4. Colt 1911 .45 ACP
5. Remington Model 700
6. Winchester Model 94
7. Browning Auto-5 Shotgun
8. Browning Hi Power
9. Ruger 10/22
10. Walter PPK

My deviations:

1. A Pre-Model 27 vs. Pre-Model 29

3. A Pre-Model 26

4. Any Military M1911 or M1911A1

8. Either a Beretta Model 92 or a Sig Sauer Model P226

9. Browning Seim-Auto .22 rim fire

10. Manurhin MR73

Ok, I'll be the first one to say this...

Of all the times and places I have felt the want or need to carry a gun, a BBQ has not been one of them!

Just what kind of BBQ's are you going to these days that you would need a gun specifically for one???

The last gun that I considered a BBQ gun was a Colt .45 ACP WW II European Commemorative. It had been shot when I got it, so for a time I carried it. Then someone offered me twice what I had paid for it. So it found a new home.

For me it would be:
S&W .357 revolver-mine is my no dash 686
Quality 1911-a custom build I was gifted in 2012
Lever action rifle-JM marked Marlin
M1 Garand
AR15-Colt 6920
Compact 9mm-S&W Shield Plus for me
Shotgun, 12ga-probably an older Remmy 870 with 18" & 28" barrels
.22 pistol or revolver-love the Browning Buckmark I picked up a few months ago
SAA in .45-either a Colt or Uberti 4 click version
Bolt action rifle, pre-64 Winchester or older Remmy in .308

Ten for me.

Long arms.

Ruger 10/22 that was a birthday present one year.
Mossberg 590.
M-1 rifle.
Colt AR.
Marlin .45-70.

Pistols.

S&W 25-5.
H&K USP .45.
FNH FNX 9mm.
S&W 13 3" barrel.
H&K USP .40. Although I also like the Beretta PX4 here in .40.

Those are all ones on hand at the house.

The OP said "Ten Guns that Should be in Every Collection". I'm thinking that you're looking for 10 guns that represent what should be in every collection. Not necessarily specific makes and models.

1. A good bolt action rifle in .30-06 or .308.
2. A quality .22 rifle.
3. A 12 gauge shotgun, either pump or auto.
4. At least one S&W revolver
5. Lever action rifle
6. Single Action revolver.
7. 1911 pistol.
8. U.S Military Service Rifle. My vote goes to the M1 Garrand. ;)
9. A good target quality .22 handgun.
10. A good self defense DA/SA semi-auto pistol.

I could expand this list quite a bit. But I think this list would cover most of the essentials. ;)

I know where one of these is and I've seen it. It's from Finland and mounted on skis so the reindeer can pull it.

I've shot one! The gentleman who was my father's NFA dealer and friend had one and I was fortunate enough to shoot it a number of times over the years.

He organized a private NFA shoot every couple of years or so on some land that he had access to - 1400 yards from an old old derrick running up a valley to a mountain side. There would be five or six groups in that circle with all their NFA stuff and would make a day of it, trying out different things. Between all the families, we went through an impressive assortment of firearms and an insane amount of ammo. Some of my favorite memories are from those outings.

Sadly, as we all know, the glory days of surplus ammo and cheaper NFA items are long gone, so the prospect of getting a Lahti isn't realistic for me right now....but it is something that if I have the chance in the future and the ability, I will get.

In days past a western Bar-b-que was close to a formal affair. A real social event. We're not talking the back yard here. This is more like the whole community. Folks dressed to the nines and showed their best.:D
That included the guns they open carried to these events. A true BBQ gun will be ornate, flashy and will most often have fancy engraving and stocks. It will also be carried in a beautifully carved leather holster. Its a show piece. ;)

We all have our own ideas about quintessential guns. Our choices are based on tastes and experiences.

1. A quality rimfire rifle. Mine is a 50's vintage Marlin 39A.

2. Good center fire revolver. I have several Smiths. My favorite is a 44 spcl.

3. Good semi auto pistol. 1911 Combat Commander

4. 22 LR handgun. As long as it is quality and accurate it fits. Mine are a S&W 63 no dash and a late 40's High Standard Field King in 4".

5. Lever gun. Pick your poison. Marlin or Winchester. I like the 30-30. This is a slot I have not filled as yet.

6. Semi Auto Shotgun. Mine is a Benelli Montefeltro in 20 gauge.

7. Pump action shotgun. No longer own one but an early 870 would be my choice

8. Classic American Double gun. I am not a SXS guy so the Parkers and such are not on my list. If I was they would be. Mine are a pair of 50's vintage Browning Superposed in 20 gauge.

9. Bolt action center fire rifle. Mine is a Kimber Custom Classic in 308. There are so many good ones that picking just one is impossible

10. AR15. Even if you do not like them, they are the current American favorite long gun.

This is the best list for all the different needs I've seen so far. Let's face it, make, model, and caliber are all extremely subjective, and while I've seen some really good suggestions for a "needs" list, there have been some that bordered on the ridiculous, if for no other reason that the average joe is never going to have one.

And probably backed up by a concealed J-frame!

Numbers don't go that high.

I agree with that one. So much is subjective and based on a person's passion for an activity with firearms and often influenced by where they live. Do they collect historical? A Colt single action would be a good example, Winchester lever action and the like. Target shooting, hunting, if hunting what terrain they live in wooded areas or open plains? Etc. So many factors to take into account. I still have family in Montana and Idaho and some of them view medium bore rifles in different actions for hunting the way in this part of Texas smaller calibers are the norm. One of my cousins used a .35 Whelan for all his hunting but if he lived in these parts would probably opt for another .30-06 based caliber for hunting: .25-06, .270 or .30-06 because of the difference in game encountered.
