I received a notice my CCW was to expire 6-10-2009. I've had it for 12 years. I sent in my $50.00 check on 3-09-2009. It was cashed in about 10 days. Here it is, almost June, and no reply from the state regarding my carry permit.

Started digging yesterday, to find out what's going on. Come to find out, proof of residency must now be provided. Photo copies of Birth Certificates will not be accepted. You must have a certified birth certificate. If you mail it in, it won't be returned to you.

I live in a small place with no drivers license bureau. Monday I'll have to go to a larger city with my canceled check and my original Birth Certificate to renew my CCW.

You wouldn't expect this after having a CCW for 12 years........Their doing all they can to discourage people from having carry permits.

This is simply a note to Tennesseans to be aware upon renewal.

The last time I renewed my Florida permit I had to get a couple of items notarized that I didn't have to before to send in with my check. I believe they'll try to do anything they can to discourage people from renewing the permits. I wouldn't doubt that in the future that they will raise the price of the permits so high that most people can't or won't pay for the things.

I ran into this when I renewed back in March. Since I also have a CDL which must be renewed in person, I always just renew both while I'm at the office. It appears that the same birth certificate that I've been using as ID my whole life (the one they gave my mother) is no longer valid. It has to be a certified birth certificate.
This new requirement applies to new and commercial driver's licenses as well as handgun permits.
They will accept a passport or DD-214 (what I used) as proof of citizenship.
This is NOT to harrass gun owners. The new requirements where put into place to prevent non-U.S. citizens from getting a Tennessee driver's license or handgun permit. Under the old laws, all you needed was proof of residency to get either.
Its sad that its come to this, but I can understand why it was necessary.

Windjammer, there should have been a letter with your renewal form explaining the new requirements. Remember, before you go to the office that it must be either a certified copy of your birth certificate, a passport or a DD-214.

While the TDOS states they will not return the submitted certified copy of your birth certificate, I did receive mine back by return mail.

I've had my HCP for many years like you, and was not happy about the new requirement when renewing. However, I do not believe the intent is to discourage applications or renewals.
