Visited a friend tonight and he had some tequila he wanted me to try. Very expensive tequila he brought back from Mexico. Hands down the best tequila I've ever had. It was smoooooooth and complex, a sipping tequila. It is aged in oak barrels for 6 years. Oh my god it is good. What is it? Codigo 1530 Origen Extra Anejo. Available here in the states. In fact, a liquor store near my house has 3 right now. of course they are $340 a bottle. I guess I'm only buying one. :)

On my several trips to Mexico, we discovered Cabrito, not a sipping tequila, more of a sitting around the courtyard, passing the bottle and smoking puros . Goes down easier than a lot of the local product. Look for the sign of the Goat.

In margaritas I usually use Hornitos or Camarena reposado. For sipping I like the Kah 110 proof Reposado, this is no longer made so I'm nursing my last bottle. I'm actually alright with any quality 100% Agave reposado or anejo. Don't care much for blanco's.

I'm sure the Codigo is just as smooth as you say, but it is out of my price range. My go to Tequila for Margarita drinks is Cazadores, either Blanco or Reposado. Lately I've acquired a taste for Mezcal. I especially like the Montelobos Joven. The Mezcal is best enjoyed neat in tradional glasses that look like candle holders.

Tee-kill-ya leaves me too dried out, so I stick to beer and bourbon.
Don't know if it will dry you out, but this tequila, I would use similar to a top shelf bourbon. The flavors are complex, like a bourbon. The aging in oak barrels gives it the color of bourbon. As a sipping tequila, you can use it similar to a bourbon. Pair it with a good cigar and a nice view.

Yeah, I’ve had some nice sipping tequila, but I always wake up the next morning just absolutely dehydrated. I often enjoyed Corralejo Anejo and other fine tequilas. My wife and I’s favorite all time was the house tequila of the resort in Cabo, the Gran Velas.

I used to buy a bottle of Don Julio 1942 every once in a while when I could get it for about $100. Really good stuff. I make do with plain old Don Julio Anejo these days. Not quite as smooth or flavorful as the 1942, but quite a bit cheaper. Especially when I buy the 1.75 liter bottle.

The tequila in the US is higher alcohol content and tastes different just FYI. it may disappoint at that price point.

That is my favorite but I get it right at the source in tequila.

If you want one that tastes similar and is less then try this:

I started crossing the border at Tijuana in 1971, with many trips in 1973 Nuevo Laredo to Monterey A few more excursions through Juarez in the 90's. Two bottles duty free so I always had my two bottles going through customs. Tried it all, some very good, some not so good. The prices were always great. Booze in Panama in the 80's was dirt cheap. Going through at NL one needed to stop at the old Mexican fort know as Boy's Town. The Chicken Ranch got shut down in 1973. What a shame. My Bandito (MC) friends in Galveston could drink that cactus juice like water. Wild times in Tejas fueled by tequila. And no, you can't hear the rest of the story.

That's George Strait's tequila line, no wonder it's so good.
