I heard a story from a friend that managed a MT ranch 20 or so years ago. Decent sized for Eastern MT about 20 miles by 25 miles. He had an old Sioux working for him that was pretty self reliant, would go fence for a while, go drink for a while and every other month or so check in for direct orders. Dave said " I could usually find him if I needed him". He showed up one time after being out in decent weather, no gumbo and said "That trucks no good". Dave asked him what the matter was and he said "No good, you go see". 70's era 2wd pickup had broken a ball joint steering arm in half. He tried all he could do, no radios in the trucks and wired it up with fence wire and drove it in. It took him 3 days of staying to the ridge tops. You gotta be tough if you are gonna ranch out here.
They left the truck there for a bit and hauled it off to a coolee, it never ran again.
