The 686 is hot but don't forget the 586!

I had a 2.5" 686+ many years before I obtained a 586 and I even obtained two more 686+ models but they are ever so different from the 586. First, none have a 6" barrel. Second, they are all 7 shot handguns that I consider to be fighting handguns. I consider the 586 to be a sexy hunting gun if I am so inclined and having hit the tiniest of targets once (long story for another time), after firing only one time, at somewhere in the 100 yard range I believe it is truly one of the finest specimens that I own.

Before the 686 there was the beautiful blue 586 L-frame. Here's some pics of my first year 586, No Dash, 8", with a 2x Leupold scope. Long range accuracy is amazing with this combo. I bought it new and have used it for hunting, NRA silhouettes, and just plan fun.

Show me your 586 .....

Sweeeeet piece! Unfortunately I do not own a 586... yet

I will admit that I prefer my 586's in stainless.......

Sorry

6" no dash
4" -4
3" -6
2 1/2" -4
ok, I admit wanting a 3" so much I even accepted the hole on the side, yes, I sold out :(

I really enjoy the looks of a nice looking "blued gun". Have 3 L frames. It all started with a 586, no dash 4". Followed by a 6" -3 686, and a 686-6 Pro-Series, 5". I have the original stocks for the 586. It is currently wearing a set of "smoothies". I tend to change stocks around. Bob

I wonder if anyone remembers, or even has ever seen, a 586 in mate nickel? very neat gun-one I wish I would have bought.

I have, my dad has one. It was his uniformed carry piece from ~1982-1990, when he bought a Glock 17. Sweet looking gun.

Actually, I would prefer it if Everybody forgot about the 586. That would leave more for the rest of us who Love the gun !
I own a 4" & 6" no dash and I'm always on the look out for another. The 586 is my absolute favorite go to .357

...Much prefer the carbon steel. ... Sure it really isn't different...
Except for corrosion resistance, in nearly every measurable mechanical property carbon steel is superior to stainless. It has better machinability, it's tougher, harder, and about 20% stronger in tension, compression, and shear. It's even a hair lighter.

I, too, am a fan of 3". Who isn't? So I was lucky enough to find a 3" 586-4 to go with a couple of others. Now to add the 3" standard 65 and the 3" 64!

As for 586 vs. 686 I give the nod to the 586. JMHO. I have the 2 1/2" 686 because I haven't found the 2 1/2" 586...yet. Not sure I will ever have the 8 3/8" but never say never!

Of course.

What I meant was the feel of shooting it.

To my mind, it feels smoother in a way.

What you said about the metal - all correct.

The 586 is one of those guns like the Dan Wesson .357 that I wish I hadn't sold, that just seems to hit what it's pointed at without much effort. Some guns require a lot of effort and concentration for a lot of reasons, but for me, a 4" Model 586 is a natural pointer with a great trigger. Here is mine with its little brother.

Beautiful 586s.... Really, really beautiful.

Blued they still do.... However I wish S&W would bring back the all stainless steel guns. Like the original Model 60 Chiefs Special. 100% stainless.

$85.00 retail, I'll take 10!!!

This thread made me go and look for a 586. Don't know what to say, Thanks for the reminder that I 'need' one! or Damn you! ;)

Long story short I look forward to have myself soon a blued 586 brother to my 686s like I could not shoot .357 Magnums from just one barrel, or two, but I need the third as well <- imagine face palm here.

Life is short :)
Been there done that after reading other revolver threads!
It's a curse I tell ya.
As you say, Life is short

Don't look now but there are at least two for sale in the classifieds right now!
