The Bad, The Less Bad and The Ugly--New Jersey Handgun Purchase Permits

NJ sounds very similar to Hawaii. A serious PITA when I spent my summers there on home leave.

I'd have my purchases waiting for me at my LGS when I hit town, and apply for permits at the Honolulu PD as soon as I arrived. Would have to wait two weeks for the paperwork to clear and take my guns home.

After I left Hawaii, friends told me that the state newly instituted a requirement requiring a doctor to sign off on your mental state prior to issuing a permit.

Oregon's pretty smooth.

When I lived there in the 70's it was just a bunch of round-trips as this was pre-Brady background check.

You went to the gun store and made the purchase. You went downtown to the PD with the complete gun information to get the permit. You went back to the store and picked up the gun. You went back downtown with the gun.

I lived on the North Shore and we had a little hardware/sporting goods/gun store. We were about as far away from the downtown PD as one could get. It's a miracle they sold guns. Every other gun store on the island was within 3 blocks of the PD.

One of those stores was J&S Sales aka "GUNS" because that's the only sign they had on the store. In spite of all the above restrictions Mark David Chapman bought the gun he used to shoot John Lennon there. Sadly.

The only "less bad" thing about it was State Law allowed you to own and register handguns at 18. You couldn't buy them from an FFL of course but private sales were allowed.

What a difference a Delaware River makes, PA is a world away in terms of what you go thru. My dear departed BIL was an FFL in Jersey, he had to have a lot of patience to even want to go there, double secret Ugly. Hang in there bushmaster.

Well since people are bragging. Private transfers require no FFL visit/permission in NC.
Meet up, show CHP, walk away.

No NICS needed at store with CHP.

I shouldn't even attempt to post how it is in Wyoming. ...well if you have a carry permit. Fill out 4473 pay leave with gun. No carry permit needed but you have to wait for nics...pay...leave with gun. Private sale is just that..private

The Good Life in Georgia

You found the GUN, price is good, Funds in Hand:

1] present driver's license and concealed carry permit

2] Receive form 4473 and complete

3] Dealer made copies of DL and CCP, completes form 4473

4] Dealer processes sale transaction or transfer fee, and hands you the firearm. Total time < 5 minutes!

Step #2, form 4473, takes the longest.

Georgia CCP costs $78.25 for initial issue (1 month), renewals are $30 (1 week), permit is mailed to you.

And some people claim Illinois is so bad? With my one time every 10 years FOID I.D. I go to the dealer, fill out the 4473, pay him and return 3 days later to pick up the gun. For long guns it is only 1 day waiting period.

I thought Bruce Rauner signed a bill that changed the waiting period for long guns to 72 hours as well when he was Governor?

I don't know if you have ever told us, but what is the situation in Japan?
Larry
I don't think private citizens can own handguns in Japan. There must be some accommodation for Olympic shooters but I don't know what it is.

It's possible to own long guns, but the licensing process is arduous, and my understanding is that the police can enter your home at will to be sure it is stored safely, and count how much ammo you have. I think shotguns regs are more relaxed than rifles, but still arduous.

On the plus side, crime with guns is pretty much unheard of. Used to be the yakuza would shoot one another with illegal handguns but the yakuza are pretty much fading away these days.

Used to frequent a small French restaurant where the chef and sole employee shot his own ducks, so some folks do get licenses to hunt with shotguns.

Yowza. I feel the pain of that process. The wife and I escaped from Illinois over 3 years ago. Not as bad as that permitting process, but we had to have the FOID card to even possess a firearm or ammo.

Now it's go to shop. Select firearm. Fill out 4473, and pay. By having the CCDW permit there is no background check.

Even though we are now constitutional carry without a permit, we maintain the permits as we travel some, and we ALWAYS carry. Most all the places we travel to recognize our permits.

I'm also LEOSA certified to carry.

It was never an easy process. In 1977 I bought a 19-3 from Meltzers in Garfield. At the time I was "I&A Police" at a state " residential hospital" which made it faster but not easier. I didn't buy another gun until I moved to Florida a few years later. It's a shame that the part of the country most responsible for the creation of this great nation has the least freedom regarding "2nd Amendment options." Joe

Some places are on my "NFE" list (if you knew Pat Rogers, you know what that means, if you didn't, I won't take the hit for defining it): NJ; MD; WI; MN. I have only gone to CA to assist a cop friend with some of the aftermath of his OIS. I suspect that when I retire, I will leave WA and not come back except for medical care (I'm waiting for a kidney transplant) because some of the same stupid laws are being imposed here.
