The best packin' stainless N-frames ever made?

That's OK Buckeye my first carry .45ACP revolver was an old Brazilian that sat in the safe for a couple of years. Had the barrel
croppped down to 3 inches. this is an older picture now it has all new internals and a park job in dark slate gray.

My favorite two "packin" stainless N frames. Both 45 Colt. Unfortunately they can't be carried at work any more. The infamous "They" decided to $#!%can the late great 45 Colt caliber, along with 44 Mag, 41 Mag and 44 Spcl........

So I had to settle on this old thing for packin' at work.

Could be worse, I guess...... :D

Lots of nice guns to put on my wish list, in the meantime I make do with a 4" 629-6 in a Simply Rugged pankcake.

I'll probably go with a .45 Colt if and when I find and buy another.

If it's good enough for Clint. I also like the option of the 8 shot full moon clips, as well as the standard 8 shot speedloaders. It conceals very well especially with a Lobo belt slide holster.

What kind of speed loaders are those? I didn't think they made them for 8-shooters.

Thomasinaz I was in the same boat on my job and they stopped me from carrying.......

Now is carry a 627 Pro Series in a duty rig on the range and when I am struck working in the office I carry the 627UDR. Changed up from the 625JM after testing on a Honda Accord at
40 yards. 158 grain JSP .357 Magnums really get the job done. I carry the revolver just to p---- the brass hats off. They want me to go to a Glock bottom feeder.

I just bought this for that very reason. One day I hope the PRC will allow CCW and if so, this gets the nod.

65-5

I load a 160g 358156 with 7g Unique and it's juuust right.

Either of these, but the 4" would be best in the woods.

624 ND
PB180013-1.jpg

These like the Skeeter load, but I found that they are deadly accurate with the 429421 over 6.5g W231.

Here's what I've carried in a cross draw holster in the woods for many, many years.

629-2 Custom

This one eats the 429244 over 22g W296 like popcorn. Man... this is a sweet piece.

I am gonna go with the OP. 3" 624 in the original holster that
was made for Smith by Gould & Goodrich if rumors are correct.
Spegel extended boot grips in ebony.

Lots of very sweet N-frame carry-guns here. I have a Horton 624 that I bought new circa 1986, but I've decided to turn that one into a safe-queen, it resided in my office desk for decades and thus accumulated no real wear, was only fired roughly a hundred times when it was new.

My current woods/carry gun is a 629PC in a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake:

I live in griz country and if I am going out huckleberry picking or into an area where I know bears are sometimes encountered (a calculated guess at best), I will sometimes carry a 4" 500, but that's another topic.

Around Alabama, the 2 5/8" PC627 UDR is sufficient... with a spare for home use. I still need a proper belt!

My first-ever S&W was the new 625-7 MG in .45 Colt my wife shocked me with 9/02. I later added a LN similar .45 Colt 625-6 MG as a 'user', preserving the sentimentally valued 625-7.

I agreed with John Taffin some time back. It wasn't my 7.5" .454 Casull SRH or my later SS 5.5" RH in .45 Colt - the MG in .45 Colt really was the 'perfect packin pistol'!

In the woods of northern Wisconsin where the black bears
seem to be taking over I carry a 4" 629-2 Mountain Revolver
with some mods.

Mountain500GripsR.jpg

I carry it in a Mernickle PS6-DA in black. Works for both the MG and the 4" 624.

44 special for urban. Magnum for woods. I have urban loads
for the magnum if it comes to that.

here are my smiths --

here are my attempt and collecting a couple of smiths, will be adding a 6 1/2 in 624 in about 3 weeks.
2- 629's
2- 625-8's
2- 686's one is a silhouette
1- 28-2
1- 19
1- 617
there is a third 686 in the photo that i have gotten rid of as i didn't need 2 4 inchers so when i get the 624 i will have 10 again.

Since the OP is about "stainless" I'm limited to only one "packin'" N-frame...this cut down, 3.5" M-624:

I you'll agree to stretch the definition to include hard-chrome then I can include this one...a cut down 3-3/8" M-1917:

No picture yet but I just received a Milt Sparks PMK holster for 3.5" N-frames that holds these two and a 3.5" 27-2 quite well.

Ooooo.... please, please.... no more... no more... I give up. So a month ago l didn't have any N frames. Thanks to the thread that Allen-frame started l now have a 625-2 5", a 625-3 4", both in .45 ACP and a 625-6 MG in long Colt. That's the good news. The bad news? My 2012 acquisition budget is done! :( :( :( At least for now! :D

You're off to a great start! Darn that Allen-Frame guy anyway!! H

Dave, REAL nice work on those carry-pieces. Who did the cut-off? H

For me, it has to be my 629 Mountain Gun. Portable, powerful and I can shoot the lightest .44 Spl to just about any SANE .44 M load. I carry mine in either a Simply Rugged pancake or a Galco DAO, depending on the circumstance. I have to add (don't boot me off the forum) my favorite carry is my Glock 22.
