They were all tired of riding in a terrible bus that had heating problems and broke down often. Buddy Holly chartered a plane, but it only seated three plus the pilot. Ritchie Valens asked Tommy Allsup to give up his seat on the plane and they tossed a coin to settle it. Valens won the coin toss, but lost.

By his own account, Waylon Jennings said, "I hope your plane crashes." He felt horrible about having said it.

Yes, a sad day indeed.

As a music lover I often wonder what we missed out on by so many rising stars dying young.

This past weekend the Winter Dance Party was held again at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA. This was started in 1979 and has been held every year since. Family members of the three often attend.

Ritchie Valens sister, Connie, now lives here in Okoboji. I have met her, charming lady. She attends the Winter Dance Party every year, says she can feel her brothers presence and connection with the Surf and Iowa.
She is also a huge supporter of the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame located here.
Helping the music live on! Gone but not forgotten.

Although I was only 13 at the time, I remember the day very clearly. My chess teacher had just arrived at the house and he was crying - he just couldn't proceed with the days lessons. Buddy Holly was from just a few miles up the road - Lubbock, so it hit home a little harder. I still have all his albums, but haven't played them in many years.

this day shall NEVER fade away.....

One positive thing is that this lead to accident victims names no being released until relatives have been notified. The musicians families first head about it on the radio.

In College we had a "wine & cheese" singalong every Saturday night in a small room in the Student Union. One week, they featured an unknown singer and he was pretty good. I had a front row seat, on a first date with a new girlfriend. He sang nonstop for 3+ hours. The Student Union Manager connected his microphone to the building PA system. After about an hour, people were coming in from everywhere, sitting on the floor on every floor, listening.

Soon after, he published an album, and a year after that he released "American Pie". That Don McLean concert was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

However, I have always wondered what happened to that old "girlfriend"...

Same thing that happened to all those guns that slipped through your fingers; some found new homes, some are still being passed around like prom dates.

Charles Hardin Holley....his influence was endless.......

Not Fade Away -
Writer credited to Buddy Holly and Norman Petty.
When I first heard that Buddy Holly and the Crickets recorded their first hits in Clovis, NM in Norman Petty's studio - radio station,
I'm not sure I really believed it.
When you drive into Clovis, it's not apparent that anything ever happened there!
So did anybody else record there?
You bet!
Norman Petty just knew that Lightning could strike twice!
The closest he ever came again was The Fireballs, from Raton, NM.
Remember Sugar Shack?

Not Fade Away (song - Wikipedia)

I was in high school in 1959 and remember this tragedy very well. A sad day. And another death in a plane crash was Ricky Nelson. I watched the Nelson family TV show every week. Those were great times and missed by many of us.

I was only 11 when they past. My very first record that I bought was Buddy Holly's Peggy Sue.

Actually, no. I may be a Collector, but I'm an Accumulator as well. In my 50 years of collecting I have only ever sold 2. And I didn't want either of them so their whereabouts are not my concern.

I have a concise database. Just don't tell the wife how many are on it......LOL

OTOH she is a treasure so she probably wouldn't complain (too loud) anyway.
