Probably well-covered earlier, sorry, with slow dial-up I'll croak of old age before being able to go back and search early threads (newbie, admittedly!).

Would M-59 be the 1st. Gen.? Then 459 2nd., and 5904 3rd.? Did wraparound grips first appear on 3rd. or 2nd. Gen.? At what point did the early grips begin cracking at the rear strap retaining pin? And, was it one little dot, or 2, that signified the better, replacement plastic materrial?

I ask these things since I just acquired a 5904 which seems recent mfg., and has NO little dot.

Lastly, did this "Generational" nomenclature apply to any other pistols besides the 39/59-type guns?

Thank you up front!! imp

Yes.

Did wraparound grips first appear on 3rd. or 2nd. Gen.?

3rd.

At what point did the early grips begin cracking at the rear strap retaining pin?

Early. They were recalled and the replacements had a "dimple" on the bottom.

And, was it one little dot, or 2, that signified the better, replacement plastic materrial?
One dimple.

I think S&W will replace the grip for free.

Lastly, did this "Generational" nomenclature apply to any other pistols besides the 39/59-type guns?

Yes.
