I went and voted for the M&P15, but only because I feel that way. It shouldn't be a popularity contest. The M1A that it's up against is a fine weapon as well.

M1a is tough to beat but the ammo is heavy so I picked the M&P now if I get an ammo bearer with the gun it would be the other way around.

Sorry, the 5.56 is just not in the same class as the 7.62. It's nice and all, but it boils down to muscle.

I have a SOCOM, there isn't a 5.56 AR made that touches it. This contest is like comparing a 4 cylinder souped up Japanese car against a top of of the line Corvette. You can add whatever you want to the 4 cylinder, but it was beaten before the race started.

The M&P is a nice rifle for what it is, but it can't be made to match the 7.62 round. The SOCOM is the perfect carry battle rifle, lighter than the M-1/M-14, shorter barrel, yet still good to 600 yards with 7.62 knock down power.
