The more things change, the more things stay the same. Comedian Alan King artfully explains the squabbling in the Middle East in the 1980s.

The most amazing thing is that other than the cast of prime characters, not much has really changed. What was said then is mostly true of what's going on now.

Funny, for sure. But on the other hand, peace in the Middle East is still as elusive as ever.

I think that then-Lt. Winston Churchill explained it quite well back in 1898. He wrote a commentary on Islam and its visible effects over the centuries that I find to be quite accurate.

Remember, he was not just a keen observer. He had done battle with Jihadists in both India and in the Sudan, where he was among the first to use an auto pistol in battle, during the charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman.

One of Wilbur Smith's novels is titled after a quote from Churchill's commentary. ("The Triumph of the Sun.")

I probably can't post his comments here, but look that up. I think you'll find that much has not changed.
