The Model 66 3" impossible question.

tbird - What state and which agency issued the 3 inch 66-4, if you know? I had another thread going trying to determine/confirm which agencies ordered these revolvers. There is some indications that more then one LE agency ordered quite a few.

Would those of you who still have your 3 inch 66 boxes, please post your special order number (julian date code) so we have more of an idea as to when these guns were produced, than is provided by the SCSW. Please include the dash and serial too, if you would. Thanks! Regards 18DAI

Sorry to bring this one out again, my 3" Model 66 (no dash)...

I have since replaced the grips with special Keith Brown hideout grips. This is in the 6K33XXX serial number range (1974 MFG) I have not been able to find out much information on this gun...

No need to be sorry about that - except you didn't show us a pic with the KB stocks in place. ;)

I have a friend who has long since mustered out and gone on to other things. He went to the S&W armorer's classes and was a fair hand with the minor revolver work that he did for his department. I used to bug him to get a 3-inch barrel for my Model 66, on the theory that a square-butt gun would suit me better. He was never able to get S&W to ship him a barrel, and he always told me it was silly to change a barrel just to get one 1-inch shorter. :D

I suppose that is about how your gun came to pass, don't you? Probably started life as a 2.5-inch gun and someone added the barrel and the target parts to make just what they wanted. In any case, it is a great looking gun and certainly something I have never seen before. :)

18DAI,
It was ordered on offical letterhead by former AR state trooper who traded it to local PD office at Pine Bluff whom i got it from. Sorry no box it was not a safe queen.
Hope that helps.

My (old) 3" 66-3 is BBT00xx too.:)

I hadn't seen one in that range before either.:)

Been tryin to read this thread but all these letters are giving me a headache. ;)
Please, feel free to PM me some numbers to go with them.:D I'll happily add them to my growing list of 3" 66's

Here's the ranges I have seen the 3" 66's in and I know I have missed a few. bold means bunch of them

66-2 - ADH, AFK, AFZ, AHJ, AHL, ANA, ANB, and ALU
66-3 - BBN, BBT, BBU, BBZ, BEE, BFK, BPR, and PCP
66-4 - BPZ, BRS, BSM, BSN, BUH, CAA, CAL, CAT, CAU, CBB, CBC, CCF, and CCN
66-5 - CDB, CDR, CEC .......... 3.25" - CEF, CEL, CFB
66-6 - FCP

Let me add to your list with the serials from my two examples that I bought new in Nov 1988 and Mar 1989. M66-3 BBN9106, and M66-3 BBT0027. At the time I thought that I needed a spare in case one wears out, but it hasn't happened yet.

Since this seems to be sort of a catalog record of them I will show my 66-3 again. Its a 1 of 300 made for lew horton. serial # is 088 and elsewhere is PCP 0141.
Mine differs from the ad as the stocks are wood. I seen another right after I bought mine with the same wood but that one also had a diamound ivory inlay.

My 66 - 3 3" has serial # BBN91xx. According to S&W CS, it was made in October, 1988. I bought it in a local gun shop, and it doesn't have a box or papers.

Yes, I just pulled it out to double check and its a 66-3 stamped in the frame.

Pulled my 3" 66-3 out of the safe a little while ago; it's serial number BEA4***. It has the non-pinned front ramp sight.

Like others have said, this one was mis-marked as a 2.5" (and mis-priced) at a local Bay Area gun shop.

I just got my two newest home, and my 66-4 3 inch is serial range CAU, product code 102715, Spec. Ord. 6069, finish S, stock SB, features MAG-NA-PORT. I don't understand the SB under stock, it is a round butt, but in SCSW it lists black blade front sight-1994 also for SB, but why under stock.
Here is a picture of them together, I will post better pics later when I have time.

My 66-3 has serial #BFK07XX and product code 102712. I'm waiting for delivery of a 66-4 with serial #CALxxxx. I won't have any more information until I receive it.

66-6 - FCP

my 66-4 3" sn# CCM 41xx

Really? It's not just very difficult to see?

So I drug it back out of the safe today (got all the Mothers' Day dishes done first...) and took a few pictures. Here is one of the front sight, which looks like it is indeed pinned!...

...however, in looking closely, I was reminded of a different discussion thread about the barrel-to-frame matchup of these guns. This one has a visible gap between the shroud and frame:

66-3_3inch-03.jpg

...it looks larger than it is (I can't get an .0015" feeler gauge in there anywhere) but I got to looking more closely at the gun --- man the barrel-to-frame fit is .. not nearly as neat as the fit on any of my other K-frame magnums.

Couple of other pics showing the fitment -- it's not something I'd ever really noticed before.

Another 66-4 3 Inch barrel

Thanks to a gentleman from this forum, I just got my second model 66 with a 3 inch barrel. This one has been fired, but in great shape - No box though, so what is the DOM for a CAA7XX S/N? Around 1994?

Did you buy the one that was on FloridaGunTrader in Jacksonville for like 5 minutes today?

Mine is a 66-2. Serial # ANA75XX
This one is DAO with a Factory Bobbed Hammer.
I am sure the DAO Parts are Factory S&W. The parts are Forged. The Trigger is Smooth and app. 0.30 wide.

The Front Sight is a Pinned on Black Blade, .215 Tall at the back tallest point. The Sight Pin is bead blasted to match the side of the front sight ramp. If it has been changed, whoever did it went to a lot of trouble to make the pin look original.

The Back Sight has a solid Black Blade, Taller than my 2.5" 66 No Dash back sight, and does not have rounded corners like my 2.5" does. Again the screws are Cherry, and the Sight Adjustment Screw & Nut shows no sign of the Blade being changed out.

It appears to have a Trigger Job done on it.
It has had Ball Loc added. The Ball is 1/2 Football shape, and not the common round ball like Power Custom installs.
The back strap has also been checkered.

The Grips that were on it when I got it were antique Hogue Rubber Finger Groove. They have a hard plastic insert in the screw hole on the bottom of the grip for the screw to tighten against. The Stirup is made different also. Instead of the stirup holes going on the cross pin as current ones do. This one has the Stock Pin Removed, and the Stirup stradles the bottom of the grip frame. A cylinder shaped piece goes into the holes on the stirup, this cylinder shaped piece is threaded for the Screw.
I am guessing that this is a very early Hogue Rubber Grip.

The old 66 is clean as a pin, and shows no signs of being carried at all.

Bob
