I have a 460v and a 629 6" classic, In my opinion the 44 kicks way harder than the 460....although i've only ever shot the 200gr hornady load

Worst recoil I have experienced has been a TC.

First a .44, it was my wn load of a 265g GCSWC (lyman 429244) over 22g W296. I shoot that out of my 3" 629 w/o issues, but the TC - fuggeddaboutit!

By far the worst was a 35 Rem. As I recall, it was a 250g bullet. Just insane! I'd never own one in any caliber.

My personal favorite is one of my 329s. Long ago I discovered its a great 44 Special. Also in the distant past I stumbled upon some 300gr full house loads, Speer or Sierra or something like that. They were 20 to a box and I managed to buy 3 full boxes for very little.

My little game is to stage my loads. I make double sure the first 2 rounds are nice tame handloads in 44 special. Even those will let you know they went off, but nothing like a 240 gr loaded magnum, and no in the same game as the 300s. So when you've got some newish fools and you're not shooting seriously at paper, out comes the 329.

The trick is to fire one special, then complain about how it hurts. Then you fire the second and last one and declare how bad it hurts. It seems to bring out the macho in some guys (victims). Then want to try it...

When the first 300 goes off almost all hand the gun back to you. Occasionally there's a tough guy who tries a second shot. I've never had anyone want a 3rd. Funny how that works.

Yes, the 340 or 360 also hurts your hand. The big guns are made out of huge chunks of steel.

For a revolver the Ruger 454 with its crappy grips gets my vote.

For a single shot pistol try lighting off a .375 JDJ from SSK Industries with a max load in my unported 14" Contender! Even with Pacs it feels like a horse kicked your hand. Always wear my PAST shhoting glove when shooting these heavy kickers. Tames a hot round down dramatically.

My 500 pushes hard,very hard with magnum loads.
A scandium (?) frame .44 or .357 has more "snap" and is very uncomfortable to shoot. I have fired a .357 & .44 mag derringer and they were both worse to shoot then the 500 Mag.

It seems like a relative thing like a heavy shove Vs. high speed snap recoil. I can tolerate the shove more than the snap because of a broken wrist years past.

My Freedom Arms 83 in 454 will really shove it to ya, especially with the more powerful loads, she will also shoot like a pussycat with midrange loads.

My S&W 360 can also be a handful with the full house 357 loads.

My 629 full house custom from MagNaPort is a pretty big boomer also, depending on the load. I will admit that I like the results from the companies porting process and use it on several of my problem children.

In the end, recoil is a pretty subjective thing IMO, but some just push with more ferocity.

My shooting partner has a real passion for big bore hand canons and his collection pretty much covers them all. From 357maximum, 44mag, 445super mag, 460 and 500 S&W but none have the intensity of his 14" Contenders in 35 Remington or 45-70 with 450gr pig loads. When he hits a pig with that thing the only movement the pig makes is down. Any of you get down to Grayson, Ga I'm sure he'll let you try it.

I've heard that the ruger alaskan .454(2") is very brutal also.
More than the .500 mag!
Not true I shoot both and the 454 is a ***** cat in comparison....

My guess is the the M&P340 comes in 1st place and the 329pd a close 2nd. But it might be the other way around.

I got the Ruger 454 and had a PC 500 hunter and for me the 454 recoils more but the 500 was a huge gun. My 325 pd with wood Ahrends was the most "unpleasant" shooting gun I've fired. I dont even want to begin to think how bad a 329PD would be with full house loads.....OUCH!

In the production category my vote is for the 4-3/4" Freedom Arms 454 with full house loads, followed by the 329 PD. I've never shot the short barreled Ruger in 454, but I'll bet its an eye opener with a max 454 load.
Custom category goes to the 500 Linebaugh Long.
To me, the 460 and 500s feel like pussycats in comparison to the above guns. The weight of the guns really tame the recoil.

I own a 329PD, 500 4" and a 340 M&P. The worst is the 340 M&P with full loads, closely followed by the 329PD with stout loads. The 500 with 700 grain handloads always is good for a little blood on my thumb from the cylinder release.

When I first shot my 329PD, I had the wooden grips on it. After a few shots I felt a searing pain in my hand. The wooden grips split and sent a sliver into the web of my hand.

I'll throw in my 2 cents worth.

The .500 Linebaugh thus far has been the worst I've handled.

The .500 S&W and the .454 Casull are pretty much a toss up to me.

And, believe it or not a 6" Model 29. We've had bears invade our part of Oklahoma over the past decade and I decided to step up my woods gun. I had intentions of scoping it and using it for whitetails. I wound up working up some Lee 310 Gr. loads using H110. After testing, I found the most accurate load. Over the next week I removed the scope and went back to the iron sights, then loaded up 50 rounds and headed to the range that weekend. 30 rounds later I was on target, and glad of it.

I was driving back from the range and noticed something I'd never experienced in 30 years of handgunning...my wrists were hurting, and I am by no means a small guy. Rather large and big boned.

I have a co-worker who keeps hoping to shoot a full fledged romp em' stomp em' .44 Mag. I'm thinking those 310 Gr. loads out of my 4" Mountain Gun might be just the ticket.

My m&p 340 takes the cake, i even had wood grips on it for awhile and shooting 357 full house out of it was really unpleasant.

Guys keep commenting on there contenders being the worst but my .356 win with hunting loads and a 204gr round seems to have a satisfying push (even at 2,400 fps). However, I wouldn't even put it in the same category as the 340's impact.

It's not just the gun/caliber - but the grips. With my 296 and Uncle Mike's Combats, which covered that backstrap, carry in an OWB holster was required - but it was quite acceptable, recoil-wise. Put the OEM boots back on, for pocket carry in a Mika holster, and it says 'Howdy!' in a big way. The first .44 Magnum I shot - a 6" 29 - had big old lacquered wood grips. My death grip on the grips probably didn't help - three rounds and my right hand's web was blistered and split - took days to recover - and a quarter century before I'd touch a .44M again - 11/02 when I bought my 629MG. It became a real .44M when S&W Accessories started carrying the .500 Magnum's Hogue grips - what an improvement when you cover that backstrap with something absorptive.

I think a lot has to do with perception. A weighs nothing little revolver cannot hurt you... then you shoot the little beast. Heck, they are so lite weight, you cannot even aim them properly. And those toy-like little grips... how could they hurt you? This could be the everyday 642 with +P loads - like my favorite 158gr LHPSWCs - or my 296 with it's small OEM boots - and 200gr Gold Dots. Heck, they are nothing in my 696 - with big old square conversion wood grips - and nearly twice the mass. The 296 just doesn't look like it could hurt your hand... but neither does the 340 - and it is misery.

I bought an Al/Sc frames/SS cylindered revolver yesterday - a 'Governor' - we'll see how it fares, recoil-wise, today. I'll bet the 340's position re pain is secure.

Good one. Years back I had a 94 and a 94/22 which to an uninitiated observer looked like twins. I was shooting the 22 and set it down next to the 30-30. My girlfriend (now wife) walked up and made a comment that that was her type of gun (meaning the .22) and she would shoot that one. Well, I handed her the .30-.30 instead...............let's just say that she was NOT happy I told her that it just seemed louder because she was actually firing the weapon. I don't think she bought that one either

I've fired a .454 Ruger, have owned M29s for decades, and had a .445 SuperMag for a few years. I DON'T have a lot of experience with these extra lightweight revolvers that some do, but in my 35 years of handgun shooting the hardest kick I ever got was from a 2 1/2" M66 with heavy .357 loads. Those whacked me pretty hard! I can only imagine the belt a light .44 mag would give, or a lightish .454 or even a .500 or .460. I'm sure I could shoot them well, but have no concrete proof. Time and practice would be required.

Probably 2 of the handguns with the most recoil are the Pfeifer-Zeliska 600 Nitro Express (Google that and watch on youtube) and the no longer made Linebaugh 500 Long. The Linebaugh 500 Long was built on the Ruger 357 Maximum frames. Never shot either one. I do have a Freedom Arms 454 Casull and it's enough for me.
