Go to your local Walmart and they carry gun cleaning products at the sporting goods area, powder blast for cleaning and CLP for lube and save yourself some money.

I would love to type a couple of pages here, but I'll keep it short. The best tip I can give you as a new shooter is to seek professional training. The NRA Basic Pistol course is quite good. You can find a course in your area here: NRAInstructors.org - Portal for NRA certified Instructors, NRA Education and Training

The course is set up for about 8 hours, but I can teach it in about 6. It covers everything a new shooter needs to know about how to shoot, how to maintain your gun, how to improve, where to look for help and how to do it all safely.

Pages 33-35 in the M&P Pistols Safety & Instruction Manual that should have come with your pistol cover basic cleaning. All the main line cleaning kits work fine, including the ones sold at Walmart. A toothbrush makes a good scrubber. I like using an aerosol solvent for the hard to reach places (trigger mechanism, striker channel, etc.). Don't over lube. Don't ignore your magazines.
