The Official Post-A-Cool-Photo Thread

This is a picture of my son squatting in a pile of captured AKs, right after the start of the Iraq war. He was with the DOD at the time, just looking.

There is just something about an old, grainy, black and white hunting photo that makes my jaw drop.

Awesome photo.

You were trying to get in the Black Bear Jamboree and you went too far?

My Wife and I were there in October for our 15 year Anniversary. First time we had been back to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg since our honeymoon in 1993.

Taken after locating an abandoned cemetery from a town that had been deserted since the early 1840s.

I took this one in November. Let this spike walk, though.

What does TACP stand for?

Yes, as Haku said, Tactical Air Control Party (AKA Tactical Air Command and Control Specialist). They deploy with the Army and live, eat, sleep, and fight with them. Their job is to provide the Army with close air support.

From GlobalSecurity.org:
Only a select few wear the Black Beret that symbolizes the Tactical Air Control Party (TACP). The Air Force specialists are assigned to Army combat maneuver units around the world. On a battlefield, they form a tactical air control party team that plans, requests and directs air strikes against enemy targets in close proximity to friendly forces. A TACP is generally a two-airman team, working in an Army ground unit and directing close air support firepower toward enemy targets on the ground.

Didn't they used to assign fighter pilots to do that? The idea was that they knew how to talk to their colleagues in the sky,, and what data they needed to do the job right.

If you watch We Were Soldiers, the fighter controller was a commissioned officer, and I believe, a pilot. (The actors in that particular film portrayed real men, two of whom received the Medal of Honor.)

What color of beret do Combat Control teams wear? I thought it was red or maroon. Pararescue men use a similar one, I think. Security Forces wear dark blue berets. Or did, when I was one of them.

Some very good photos here. My addition is a hungry coyote responding to my call.

Nice pic of a lightning strike. I saw a southern pine just like that right after it happened. It took a couple of months but it finally died as well. It had a bright white stripe going around it like this tree in the photo where the bark had been blown off.
