The President's Analyst is running on one of the second tier cable franchises (Encore?) this week.

It's a GREAT movie about a hip psychologist (James Coburn) who thinks he's really hit the big time when he's chosen to become the president's analyst... until the job turns into not just a personal nightmare, but a real threat to his life when parody "alphabet" agencies (FBR and CEA), the KGB, and even the Canadian Secret Service vie to either kidnap or kill him. And the REAL villains and their plan were a shock when the movie premiered. Today, it seems like prophecy.

The supporting cast includes Godfrey Cambridge, Severn Darden, William (the voice of "KIT" from "Knight Rider") Daniels and in a key cameo, Pat Harrington, the handyman from "One Day in a Time".

When it came out in 1967, it was satire. It seems more like a documentary now. The paranoia which it reflects seems so completely justified today, that you half expect Nostradamus to have a mention in the credits.

And the soundtrack, especially the opening credits sequences, is simply brilliant.

A 3 1/2" Model 27 makes an hilarious appearance when Coburn escapes the White House with the help of a gun toting liberal (William Daniels) and his all American family. It's also the first appearance of an M16/AR15 in an entertainment film that I can recall.

I've loved this movie since I first saw it, and try to watch it every few years.

Have not seen it in forever. The only two things I really remember is when he two feds show up at the house, and they ask the kid where his parents are, he says, "They went to eat chinks", and Godfrey Cambridge tells him, "Don't say 'chinks', say Chinese Restaurants".

And driving that Amphicar off the side of the ship and driving to shore.

I have not seen this movie but I'll look for it. I've never been a Coburn fan even though he has been in some terrific movies. His role in Paybck with Mel Gibson was memorable.

I haven't seen that film but I have taken a ride in an Amphicar, including a turn in a canal. Long ago but not very far away.

Watch: Cross of Iron--James Coburn was exellent at: Sergeant Rolf Steiner. Also watch: Major Dundee-he was also excellent as the Scout: Mr.Potts. Just two of many of my favorite Coburn movies. Forgot--here is a 3rd Coburn favorite: Hell is For heroes--opposite Steve McQueen and Fess Parker.

Honorable mention: In Like Flint.......:D

"In Like Flint" is my favorite Coburn film, both for the fight scenes and the fantastic Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack, which is currently out of print. There's a combined "Our Man Flint/In Like Flint" recording in print, but it leaves out the best piece from the latter soundtrack.

I love those movies too and If I recall? and not straying so much--I THINK The Presidents Analyist, and the Flint movies--are all available on DvD as of about 18 months ago. If interest/ go to the Warner Brothers site and I THINK, I saw them in their Archives section (which you can get because these are all MoD titles: Made on Demand) or either in another section there.

Edit: just found out that Warner Bros does not have these titles an imnot sure what Studio actually released them but--ill check since that studio may have them asMoD ttiles which WB cant get.

Encore and TCM have shown the "Flint" movies relatively recently.

Back in the '70s(?) there was a "Flint" tv series starring Ray Danton. It was of course dreadful and didn't make it through a whole season.

I liked the film a lot...I remember the Model 27, or "magnum .357" was the car gun, and the "magnum .44" was the house gun!

Was William Daniels a co-star of Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. in an FBI TV series? I think I recognize the name.

I feel a little unfulfilled in that those posting about riding in those amphi cars didn't describe the experience.

Ah, so, Dr. Schneider and Dr. Wu.

The President's Analyst was a great period piece. TPC, prophetic indeed. We were big fans of Severn Darden at the time, although at this remove, I couldn't name another movie he was in. But he seemed to pop up all the time.

My brush with fame: Godfrey Cambridge was a bit of a pal of my dad, who was a newspaper movie critic; Cambridge used to give him the use of his Sausalito houseboat, which made for a great party escape weekend for a bunch of starving college students. I only met the man once. He gave me a political button which, because its content was political, I will not describe here. But I will tell you, it was funny.

Great actors in it.
I have to say though, when I read the title of the thread I thought it might have been about Dr. Phil and current events.
Don't need the ding, so I wasn't going to reply.
