The President's Analyst is running on one of the second tier cable franchises (Encore?) this week.
It's a GREAT movie about a hip psychologist (James Coburn) who thinks he's really hit the big time when he's chosen to become the president's analyst... until the job turns into not just a personal nightmare, but a real threat to his life when parody "alphabet" agencies (FBR and CEA), the KGB, and even the Canadian Secret Service vie to either kidnap or kill him. And the REAL villains and their plan were a shock when the movie premiered. Today, it seems like prophecy.
The supporting cast includes Godfrey Cambridge, Severn Darden, William (the voice of "KIT" from "Knight Rider") Daniels and in a key cameo, Pat Harrington, the handyman from "One Day in a Time".
When it came out in 1967, it was satire. It seems more like a documentary now. The paranoia which it reflects seems so completely justified today, that you half expect Nostradamus to have a mention in the credits.
And the soundtrack, especially the opening credits sequences, is simply brilliant.
A 3 1/2" Model 27 makes an hilarious appearance when Coburn escapes the White House with the help of a gun toting liberal (William Daniels) and his all American family. It's also the first appearance of an M16/AR15 in an entertainment film that I can recall.
I've loved this movie since I first saw it, and try to watch it every few years.
