The price of gas....in Kiwiland

Nonsense

I'm betting the world switches from carbon based fuels because we have to. It will be slow, painful, filled with political stunts and corruption, but we will pull it off

The inconvenient truths of science and engineering will prevent it, no matter how much the amateur automotive engineers in government want it to happen to pander to environmental lobby and corporate interests. The best current lithium ion battery technology can carry about 1/60th the energy content of gasoline. That's right. One pound of gasoline equals 60 pounds of batteries. Not good for transportation applications, particularly aviation.

For fixed, stationary power applications and prime movers we have given up on the greatest isotopic power source ever discovered by mankind, God's big energy fix, nuclear power. Why? Ignorance and fear. Ask how may lives were lost in the nuclear disasters at Three Mile Island and Fukushima. Zero. The worst civilian nuclear power accident in history, Chernobyl, caused about 50 deaths. The number of killed and injured for all other forms of energy production are staggering by comparison.

On the subject of gasoline cost, there is an underlying, inconvenient truth about motor gasoline price that politicians don't want to talk about. Refined motor gasoline costs about the same to produce all over the world. The difference is taxes. Governments know to tax what is absolutely essential to modern life and a high standard of living.

Rudi, the simple answer is "Yes" there are plenty of natural resources, however, the drilling for oil and natural gas, or the mining of coal is not permitted...

I guess that it must cause more of an ecological disaster there because they have to drill up, and not down! :-)
