I do 12-15,000 km (7,500-9,400 mls) privately per year, depending on how often we have to go to Auckland for Karen's medical reviews.

At work we get about 6 weeks between services every 10,000 km (6,250 mls). But that is with two of us sharing the car. We generally do 100,000 km in 15 months and then get a new car.

The new MG we have had now for 3 weeks has about 300 km (187 mls) on the dash. Have gone through a little over 1/2 a tank of gas.

Prices of all electric vehicles are through the roof. The government instigated a fee rebate scheme from 1st July, so all the importers/dealers put up the prices by the amount of the rebate scheme.

I could get away with an EV around home, but they simply do not have the range to travel as far as Wellington, let alone Auckland.

We did just over 7,400 miles in 5 weeks in the U.S. About what we do in a year here with fewer trips to Auckland (the 4 year old plus 2 weeks Mazda CX 3 we just traded had 53,000 k on the clock, just over 13,000 k a year). And the price of gas at the time was between U.S. $2.65 and $3.35 per gallon (4 litres).

Loved the driving, even on the smaller highways. Can't wait to do it again.

It's hard for me to understand how people think switching to electric vehicles is an answer when so many places have rolling blackouts now because they can't generate enough electricity.

So we can't generate enough electricity to supply the grid now. What we need to do is add a whole lot more demand for electricity, that'll fix it.

Canada just over our Northern border averages $4.622 US dollars per gallon. Here in Montana it is averaging $3.33 and in Texas average is $2.94

The west coast has the highest cost and the strictest gasoline standards and highest state taxes.

The climate has always been changing. Just a few years ago we were all going to freeze to death if we did not go solar. I use to find sharks teeth in the creeks right here in the middle of Florida 100 miles from the nearest coast.. We have a while before the tides get that high again just because we are using fosil fuels.

I paid $286.9 for a fill-up of 87 octane this morning. I also agree with with previous comment that it will take a long time to convert. Our nationwide infrastructure is not in great shape now and billions, probably trillions will be required for new power and upgrades to existing grids. And wait until the "greenies" find out how much it costs to dispose of windmills, solar panels and electric batteries. Talk about environmental destruction.

The "They" in your sentence being who? You the consumer? Not part of the formula of consideration.

That's capitalism. The profit motivated operators of petroleum refineries are dealing with a long-term and worsening worldwide excess of refinery capacity, greater than three million barrels per day. Because of this glut, refineries are closing all over the world. These closures are imperative to maximize share value.

Keeping your refinery open would require taxpayer support, either through subsidies or nationalization. Both options probably at greater overall cost to the citizenry than purchasing product on the open market.

Forgive my ignorance here: Half of South America is on fire. Some fires to provide clear land for farming, and a considerable amount of newly cleared land is used to grow drugs. The various governments involved seem to do little to control burn off or resulting atmosphere destruction. China, India, Russia, the former Soviet blok and S.E. Asia don't seem to be concerned with Global Warming. The U.N. is a worthless, impotent non performer that rarely gets anything done anymore. So no help there. All the king horses and all the kings men are needed to put the Earth back together again. Why should we bare the constant criticism of our lifestyle when we're not the only offenders. We need that little Swedish girl to go to the Columbian jungle and stamp her foot.

TO50% convert all automobiles (not actual trucks) to electric in the next 20 years we will need to increase our electrical output by 50% at the very least. That is without doing away with any coal fire generators. There is no app for building such infrastructure on a cell phone or computer. First you need all the impact studies, then you need the craftsmen, steel concrete, copper, aluminum etc etc. The majority of craftsmen are over 50 and the number of young people going into the trades is way low. It seems for me that we have been told for the past 50 years that "we only have 5 years" to fix whatever problem the chicken littles are pushing.

Notice that it is no longer "global warming", but is now "climate change"? That way, no matter which way it goes they can sell their totalitarian solution.

Rudi, the simple answer is "Yes" there are plenty of natural resources, however, the drilling for oil and natural gas, or the mining of coal is not permitted...
