The Problem with Mountain Guns

I found a 625-4 with a Springfield Armory emblem on the right side plate and Arms For The Nation etched on the barrel at a gun show today. Probably paid too much but it sure looks and feels nice. Now I need a good source for a bunch of moon clips and tool.

Let me know when you get tired of it. :)

Newbie question here, and not to hijack the thread. But what is a MG exactly? Or what characteristics set them apart?

'Nuff said.
686, 29, 629, 625 ACP

You are the reason I can't find one!! :)

Well one of them turned into four. They make something today to stop them from multiplying so much.

You people are reason I cannot find anything like this in my area.
:p

Well in these parts, it's my S&W Mod 625-6 / .45 Colt...

Aside from that: 4" tapered barrel, black powder cylinder bevel, round butt, 1 of 5 calibers (.357 mag, .45 Colt, .45 acp, .44 mag, .41 mag), smooth CT, CH, pinned front sight.

As close as they came, they SHOULD have made one out of the S&W Mod 24 or 624 / 4" / .44 SPL also. Would have been THE LAST WORD, in the Mountain Gun series...

Now you have me looking for a 45 Colt. ;)

My problem with Mountain Guns is that I can't find one in .45 ACP, so I think I'm just going to buy one in .45 Colt and have the cylinder cut for moon clips. Kill two birds with one Smith!

I agree, this one should be a standard production gun.

Maybe these two should get honorable "Mountain Gun" status?

Hog taken with the 629-4 using the Crimson Trace laser grip, just put the red dot on the forehead and BOOM, dead hog.

I want one in 45 colt...Think it would make a nice 50th B-Day present to myself...Now if I can just find one with no lock.

Tony P.

Get yourself a 25-7! If you can find one, that is. S&W only made 2000 of them. Five-inch barrel...incredibly accurate and well-balanced. They came from the factory with Hogue grips, but I switched the Hogues for these factory smooth grips.

I had a 396 Mountain Lite, but simply couldn't stomach the recoil. With the factory open backstrap grip, it left a painful crease in my palm after only three rounds. Sold it begrudgingly and moved onto tamer revolvers.

If the big N-frames are Mountain guns, then I nominate the 696 as a Hill gun. Perhaps a Modest Incline gun.

Gaijin: did you swap the sights on those 44 mags? I have one, but it has a black ramp.

Yes. FS is SDM Fiber Optic.
My hunting is regularly in low light and timber. I cannot find a black (or gold bead for that matter) fast enough in the shadows to make a lot of shots encountered with hogs. ANY ambient light and the FS stands out like a neon sign.

The grips are extensively modified Herrett's "Shooting Master's".

Galjin

I see they make different heights for the front sight. What one did you use and why?

Thanks

Tony P.
