The thrill of a quality cheap AR

I don't disagree. But I also don't drop a grand on an ACOG. Instead I put $350 into a Burris 332. It'll do all of the above you describe for the ACOG, with the same prism scope advantages of ruggedness, zero retention, compactness, eye relief and field of view, but at 1/3rd the price.
I'm glad you like the Burris.

Today an acquaintance bought a new MP Sport II, the model with the railed gas block in the front, not the A2 sight post. $499 plus tax. Tomorrow we shoot.

Rastoff makes some good points......... the old golden rule was an optic should cost as much as the rifle................................

But he's thrown down another of those d--- "Rastoff Challenge's"
Guess I'm going to have to go out and drop my 1990s Bushmaster with it's Aimpoint PRO off the deck.....and do a WWF "body slam" off the top rail.....
God I know that's going to hurt these 60+ year old bones

:D

As for optics, I'm happy with the different name brands I have (none were cheap). I have a couple favorites I lean towards.

I still have and shoot the original M&P Sport and M&P Sport T. Got a great deal on both. One thing he didn't mention. People should take the weapon out of the shipping box and inspect it for any flaws BEFORE they lay down any cash, NOT just say I'll take that one and out the door.

I did notice after the stampede started, assembly and quality started dropping, rushing to get them out the door trying to keep up with demand with "most" of the manufactures. Both my M&Ps have a much better fit and finish compared to later runs of the same models.

He's right about cheap scopes (I'll add cheap junk, dirty ammo, not cleaning the storage lube off and lubing per the manual) and then complaining the weapon is junk. Not to mention cleaning/smoothing any burrs and getting it broke-in before swapping parts out.

Both my M&Ps are still good entry level weapons at a low cost and have been very reliable over the years and still going strong.

Ruger has a nice AR556 and SR556 I've been very happy with.

Is/was the Colt LE6920 "quality" worth more $$$ than those ? Couldn't see paying extra for a dancing pony, but I got a great deal on a unfired LE6940 that had been sitting forever collecting dust instead. ...picky "fan boys" didn't want that one. ???

High end quality. That'd be my factory hand assembled mid length gas DD M4-V7 with the ACOG or any of the other DD M4s in mid or rifle length gas systems, with ACOG or EOTechs (EOTechs I've never had problems with or could get to malfunction in ANY weather conditions for the record).

I have friends that "think" their BCMs are better high end quality. Both are very pricey and not for the weak of heart or a nasty wife. :)

My wife decided on an ACOG for her DD M4 V9 after she'd been talking with our nephew a few years ago and was talking about what a beating they will take and still stay zeroed. He was just back from 2 tours in Afghanistan. Pricey, but she liked the lifetime warrantee.

But in the end, the MP Sport II is a great entry level weapon at an affordable price. I see a lot of happy people out there buying and shooting them.

I got a sales notice today, complete DPMS uppers for $149.99 and complete Anderson lowers for $129.00; tax, FFL fees and shipping would put your bit over $300.00.

It shot 100%. We used 55 grain American Eagle .223 and Frontier 5.56. The trigger is better than that on the 6920. Even shooting fairly vigorously, the non shielded handguards got barely warm. Excellent value.

Depends on the generation. Early Sports had 5R rifling, while the later ones didn't. Does the 5R make them more accurate-no way of proving it. It does make the barrel easier to clean.

Dumping the 5R didn't sit very well with many of the "fan club" back then. Many of us thought it shot a lot better. Switching from the Melanite barrel didn't help matters any.
