I talked to the factory today about internal locks. There is no plans to eliminate them on the current production revolver. To do away with the locks would cut down the companies sales as there revolvers would not be salable in several states. I do not think the collectors want to see the company have loss of sales as that would hurt all of us.

They are losing some sales now, at least of newly manufactured revolvers. As much as I sympathize with the folks who live in the occupied territories, I fail to see why I should agree to buy revolvers that I consider to be potentially unreliable just to help S&W sell guns there. I'll stick with pre-lock Smiths when I have a choice.

If they really cared about their customers they would figure out a way to profitably make both versions. That way everybody would be happy, right?

As Roy Jinks always says " The Factory does not care about selling "collectors" just guns."
It is 2009 and the lock is part of life now. So do like norad45 says buy the old stuff. In a lot of ways a very nice N frame of old is even cheaper than the $1000 price tag of the new stuff.
We can tell the newbies about the old days!

Which states REQUIRE an INTERNAL lock?

Why are they willing to forego sales of the M&P auto without the lock? But aren't the locks OPTIONAL in the M&P? If they AREN'T losing sales because the lock is optional in the M&P, why would they lose sales from it being optional in revolvers?

Maryland is currently the only state requiring an internal lock. Safety Wesson must sell alot of revolvers in Maryland.

Pre lock S&W's are still abundant, superior and cheaper. I personally could care less what Safety Wesson does anymore. They haven't made a revolver I would want in the last 8 years. Regards 18DAI.

I have a solution for the lock issue.........
Stay with me now.......
this is very complex.........

IF you don't like locks, don't buy guns with locks.

IF you like locks, buy guns with locks.

IF you don't really care, buy both.

I realize this issue will require much study, contemplation, discussion, flaming, arguing, moaning, crying, needless repetitive threads(not this one) totaling hundreds of dollars in bandwidth, and general angst.

Gosh darn it, Lee!

Haven't we talked about "making sense" before?

I *know* we've had the discussion about "some people need something to complain about".

Ah well... where can I send a few bucks for the bandwidth?

*Looks for the little padlock icon...*

I'm with 18DAI, if S&W goes out of business because they ignore their clients so be it. I won't buy an inferior product just to keep someone else's cash cow alive.

I have formed a Commission to study this lock issue. I currently have on retainer two attorneys, one patent attorney, four engineers, one metalurgist, two pastors, a psychiatrist, three NRA certified shooting instructors, a paramedic(for the discussion meetings), an off-duty policeman(again, for the meetings), a registered Democrat, and a rocket scientist.

We were not unanimous in our opinion after examining your post, but the consensus is you fall into my first recommendation above.

If you can add a transgender dwarf, you may be eligible for a stimulus grant.

A Smith & Wesson sales rep was in my local gun shop the other day so I asked him when Smith was going to trash 'The Lock'? It was clearly not a question he wanted to get into, but he did say that Smith couldn't sell in some states without the lock and that most sales were to new shooters who didn't know any better. Now that made we feel so much better.

You should have asked him which states. The answer seems, "MAYBE ONE". Those Marylanders [maybe] are some revolver buying SOBs to have THAT much influence with S&W.

There, fixed that for you.

If you agree to order enough of them, they'll make them without the lock. Happens with some regularity for export customers and there have been special runs of domestic production revolvers (442 and 642 recently) without the lock.
