I have a 28-2 N180XXX 6" bbl. It's a 3 screw model. I bought it in '77 for $100. I think I did O.K.

I found this site while trying to find info about a S W highwaypatrolman. So here is my first post.
This one says S 1216xx and has a 30308 on the hinge and number 7 below the 30308. Looks like a coke bottle grip from the pics I saw on this forum. It looks to be in good shape too!
A family member was a fish and game agent in CA, his old badge and his 357 go well together. The holster is a buckheimer, how to preserve it? any tips?
I can't wait to have it looked at and cleaned by a pro so we can fire it. Anyone suggest a good shop in NW WA State?

Congratulations, Cars&Guns, and welcome to the Forum! You started out with a fine Smith there! The numbers under the crane in these pre-model number guns really don't mean anything, they are assembly numbers. The serial number is the one preceded by the S on the bottom of the grip frame, and is the one that tells us most about the gun. PM sent......
Hello Everyone! New to the forums, and came here looking for information. Boy, did I find it! Always been a bit of a wheeler-dealer-trader, and managed to pick up this beauty the other day, and didn't know much of anything about it at the time, so I started Googling around, and low and behold, I came across this wonderful thread. Spent 3 evenings reading through the whole thing, and loved everything. You guys have more info here than anywhere else I've come across.
Anyhow, on to the interesting stuff.
Apparently I've found a S&W pre model 28.
Initially, I had no clue how to identify anything about it, but from my reading here, it's described as follows.
1954 .357 Highway Patrolman w/4" barrel, pinned & recessed, 5-screw
S/N - S 1302xx (On frame & back of cylinder)
The barrel has a different S/N - S 1102xx
Work number (on hinge & frame right behind hinge) 41407
It has the correct Magna grips with the diamonds & black washers inside.
The right grip has S/N 153258, and the left grip is unnumbered, however, there is a name fully embossed up the inside edge of the backstrap. First initial, middle initial, last name. Don't necessarily want to post that here, but the grips & frame have been together long enough that the name has also transferred to the grip.
I'm no expert, but I would place the condition & bluing at about 85%, maybe better? There's a slight wiggle to the lockup, but nothing horrible, and the trigger is very light & crisp. Possibly the best I've ever felt.
Well, That's about all I can tell verbally. On to the pics!
And I suppose I should also thank & congratulate Allen for starting one of the more awesome firearm threads I've yet to come across!
If anyone has any additional info they would either like to know about it, or pass along my way on either the gun, OR the ammo box pictured (100% full), that they want to share, that would be wonderful!

I found a 28-2 4inch at a local gun store marked down to $300 in very good condition.
Of course it is a good deal. The only way it could be a better deal is if the box and wrapping paper were included.
But alast, that is not to be the case.
But it will soon occupy a place in my gun safe.

My 1st .357 was a 4" HP back when I was 15, it had a bad nickel job, and was almost worn out at the time. I traded it for a newer model 19 ,but I have wanted another HP ever since. Maybe a 6" this time.

Welcome to the Forum Starfire! I would lay dollars to.....donuts...that you have a former Law Enforcement gun, a few clues being the mismatched grips and the fact it's not cosmetically perfect but in great shape. I would also bet that somebody swapped the barrel at some time in the past (maybe as early as the '50s) from a 6 to a 4. You have a great gun there!

Since I'm not really a collector, and modern-style appeals to me more, I ended up trading it to a buddy for his collection and wound up with something more to my liking. Got an immaculate S&W CS40 in trade for it. Both of us walked away happy!
