The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Picked mine up a few months ago. It's a 28-2. Serial# is N1839x, which going by phenson's ship date mine shipped about a month or so after his. Has 4" with little dings here and there, but it gives it character. Will try to get a picture of it on soon.

Since we're on the subject of 5 digit 28-2 serial #'s, I recently picked up a 4in with service grips in very good condition, no holster wear, very thin turn line. Oh yea the serial # is N 84xxx. Liked this one so much I picked up a 6in in even better condition except for the target grips, they has a small chip missing at the bottom front corner and a couple dings on the sides,, but they are very dark which is my preference. Was so excited when I found it that I failed to notice it was recessed but NOT pinned. The magic number is N980xxx. So it looks like I have an early and a late example of this wonderful model. If anyone could provide production/ship dates I would appreciate it. Tks

according to the SCSW:

N 84xxx sometime between 1969 and 1972

N980xxx sometime between 1982 and 1986

Very Late S-prefix 28-2

Picked this up over the weekend for a bargain price. At first I thought the stocks may be replacements but they have the black washers and may be correct if this is a 1970 gun, I think? I don't see another one with a later S-prefix serial number in the database, anyone got one? I doubt this one was shot much but just sat around collecting dust. The barrel looks to be original but the purple tint in the right light is throwing me off a bit. Glad to add this one to the thread.

Nice find!
S332676 looks like it was made in 1963.
Those targets are replacements since they aren't diamonds.

I just picked up a 6" 28-2 made in 1964 with serial # S251xxx at a gun show yesterday. It's wearing diamond magna's numbered to the gun.
No pictures yet.

To pick on a blind ref, bad call! Diamonds went away after 1968. The grips are correct.;)

But let's see your gun!

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, the serial number on that 28-2 , S332676 lists it as being made in 1963.
That means it should have diamonds on it.

Unless I really am really blind (which according to some of the players that I referee, I am!!), those targets don't have diamonds around the screws.
Am I missing something??

SWCA members have access to databases that allow us to see more detailed info on guns that members have submitted to the databases. With that info I can see guns with serial numbers in that general range with later shipping dates. We find that the Standard Catalog is not always very accurrate with their shipping date estimates. Here's a plug for the SWCA as this is just one of the cool benefits of membership.

Thanks for that info!

So that 28-2 shipped that much later than the SCSW has listed?
Shouldn't the gun still have diamonds on it if it was made in 63, even though it didn't ship until much later?

Thanks again for the knowledge :)
I guess I'd better join the SWCA.

My understanding is that the manufactured frames would just sit stockpiled at the factory and when an order came through then they would bring out the frames and do the rest of the assembly and stock fitting. So this frame may have sat around at the factory for a few years and then when an order came in then they would fit the stocks to the frame. Because of this the shipping date usually coincides with the stocks of the period. So if it did indeed ship after 68 then the stocks could be correct even though the frame had been manufactured much earlier.

Hi to all,
Here's my 2 mod 28-2's. 6" barrel is SN N265xxx, 4" barrel is N85xxx.

Good to know. Thanks for the info!! That makes sense.

Here are a few pictures of the 6" 28-2 I found at a gun show this past weekend. I was looking for a 4", but this was priced right and too clean to pass up. The grips number to the gun and it looks like it's lived an easy life.

Recent addition

Model 28-2 4" barrel SN # N254765. Stocks are very dramatic grain Targets.

Patrick just a couple of hours ago confirmed shipment of the two sets of stags with medallions and rounded bottoms (service style like the M58) stags I will put on the two 4in HPs...both N prefix guns...that will go to my two grandsons before the end of this month. I have the Tyler T grips already. I can't add the numbers because the guns are not here with me at the moment but both are 97-98% IMO.

My old 6in. # S205372 is next to me as I type this. It ain't as pretty as the 4 inchers but it locks up tighter than any S&W I have ever seen, and I have seen a LOT of them. It also shoots like a rifle out to 100yd with 158gr Magnums when I do my part.

Now to find a really nice 4in. 4 or 5 screw for me!
