The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

28-2

Just picked up this 28-2, serial number N53XXX which probably means it was made in 1969 or 1970.

New here. Been on the Ruger Forum for awhile as have more of them. Would it be sacreligous to convert a 28 to 44 Special?

Yes. Comb the gun shows, gun shops, pawn shops and the internet for a Model 24 or 624. It'll probably be cheaper than the converted gun and you will not have messed with a nice original Smith 28.

And here is a vote to do with it what you want. Though the 28 is, imho, one of the coolest revolvers out there, there were alot made and they are available. Unless it is a 28-1 do as you wish! If it is a 28-1, sell it to me!:)

Just picked this one up S 246xxx turns out to be a birth year gun for me
I want a 57 for my birth year gun though

New 28-2

Hi yall. I just joined up and this is my first post. I am mostly a revolver guy and just purchased a 28-2 N584128
i think that makes it a 1979 or 1980?
The gun is in very nice shape very little cylinder trace
However the barrel is kind of a purple blue color a bit different than the rest of the gun. Is this normal?
I purchased from my friend who"s Uncle passed it on after death. All the numbers match seems in great shape pinned and recessed

Good find, that's one of the last pinned and recessed versions. Bluing turning plum-colored isn't uncommon (has to do with slight errors in the bluing process, from what I understand). Some folks don't care for it while others actually appreciate it and seek it out (some HK collectors, for example). Nice gun and welcome to the forum.

Plum coloring...

seems especially prevalent in Model 28s. Maybe Roy Jinks has some idea what the bluing process was that might cause this.

It does seem to be a lot in Model 28-2 I saw another thread on this site and several pictures of guns the same as mine with the same plum coloring.

there are several pictures in another thread of 28-2 guns that look just like mine and asking and discussing this issue and why it happens. I don't mind i think it looks pretty nice. OPPS sorry for the repeat

This is my first S&W firearm.

I've had it to the range only once, so far, and just started to see what sorts of loads it like. The previous owner had a set of Pachmayr Grippers on it and I replaced those with Herrets in cocobolo as shown below.

S/N: N591889

Shown is best group of the night. 158 gr XTP over 12.9 gr 2400 shot using the Pachmayr grips. 25 ft, rested.

WOW!

Great little group there, and a beauty of a 28!

I love the grain on those grips....

Thanks, leadlobber. I got those grips from CDNN for less than $40.

I wishathe rest of the groups were that good! They're not bad, though. There's a good bit of holster wear, so the top of of my front sight is well polished nice and shiny. Next trip, I will blacken them with soot. Same for the rear blade. Maybe I can coax a few more groups like that one. I sure hope so.

Here are my two M28's. I inherited the 6" Model 28 from my father, who "unoffically" got it from the local law enforcement where he lived. It was used in a shooting (I believe a woman shot her husband with it). It was seized as evidence. After the trial, the police were to disposed of it. They happened to be goood friends of my dad's, and he was the "dispose-ee".

The 4" revolver now has "football" target grips.
