This is my Model 28-2 Ser #N96910. Issued to me mid 70s and my department let me keep it when I retired in Mar 94.

A couple my most memorial kills: You need a good heavy revolver for large critters.

This guy was causing quite a fuss, I nailed him with the above service revolver when he started after my patrol car. Didn't like my overheads I guess.

This buff I bought at Custer State Park Auction. They auction off the wild buffalo to thin out the herds, I figured it would be a lot of good cheap meat.

My ideal was to turn it loose in my back pasture and hunt it with my Remington Rolling Block. After I got it home it tried to tear my trailer a part when my wife and granddaughter tried to feed it. Decided I'd be fixing fences for a while so I figured on shooting it in the trailer. My taxidermy neighbor told me not to use a rifle, saying a revolver would work. First shot out of my Model 28 bounced off his head.

That really made him mad. He really started tearing up my trailer.

After my neighbor told me to draw a imaginary line from its horn to the eye, and another line from the other horn to its other eye, and shoot where the lines would cross. That worked. I took the picture with the Rollingblock so I could tell my grandkids wild stories.

Just picked up my 1st S&W revolver today. I have a few questions. I checked the original post and it falls in the "1959--1960 S194500 to S206999" serial# range(S2042XX) below that on the arm that swings out is 4 digit set of non matching #'s 6429 with a 7 and an A below that. Can anybody tell me what they mean?
Approx value?
Should I shoot the hell out of it? special occasions? not at all?
Also says MOD-28 when people say "no dash" or "pre-dash" is that the dash they are referring to?
Any info is greatly appreciated.

I just inherited a 28-2 and after trying to do some research on it, I end up here. I see most of the numbers posted having S or N with 6 digits. My serial number is N with 4 digits. Am I to assume that it's a 1969-1972 production model?

Thanks for the awesome thread about this superb S&W!

This was my fathers service revolver from when he was on the Milwaukee Police Department. S/N S280xxx puts it in the 1966-67 vintage I believe. Served him well until his passing in 1980.

Grips are original and show the wear from years on his hip. A little surface rust but a great deal of sentimental value, in addition to being a GREAT shooter.

Hello folks... First, let me apologize for my extremely long, extended absence. You see, I've just spent the last 8 months opening up an old fashioned (like you would find 40-50 years ago) gun shop, complete with old wooden stools, free hot coffee, and a 6 foot oak table so that people can bring in their lunch and have a place to sit down, eat and talk guns. But that is another story...

Okay here we go with the part that pertains to this thread: So this past Friday, a man walks into my newly opened shop with what is obviously on old 1980's S&W box. Price tag is still stuck to the top, showing $305.50. End of box shows it to contain a Model 28, 6 inch. He is looking to sell it and a Remington 1100... An examination of the Model 28 showed it to be unfired, with all paperwork (including the manual and 2 different firearms safety brochures from S&W.) The tool kit is still unopened. He explained that he was needing to sell of some of his guns - I learned a long time ago to never ask "why?" because it might anger the seller.

I asked him his price and he named it... I didn't even try to bargain with him due to the fact that I was very comfortable with it, especially considering the condition and completeness of the package. Let's just say that it was well within the prices shown in the SCSW, and would have caused strokes on sites like GunBroker.

So here is were I'm falling short of information. I've been through this thread, and all through my SCSW studying on this revolver. It must have been one of the last ones made, since it is a 28-3, non P&R, and has a serial number of AHY9XXX. Now, based on what I've read, a serial number in that range would have been after the conversion from the "N" numbers which were, as I understand it, used during 1986 as well.

Is there more information concerning the serial numbers in print somewhere that I am not finding? I'm not ready to have this one lettered just yet, as I really like the amount I have invested at this point.

I'm wearing it today here in the shop, but will post some pictures of the entire package tomorrow...

sorry im late to the party. this is my first post so go easy! I just got my HP from my dad's estate. no model number #1340XX it does have "S" marked throughout but not next to the serial #. Aftermarket brushed finish.Any info and date would be appriciated. Great forum . I will get my HP checked out and cant wait to go shoot it.

I guess this is a good time for my first post. Just picked up a model 28 HP, 6 in barrel, S202xxx, at my local shop. I won't post pictures until my wood grips get here... it came with presentation grips, small, and they do not do the gun justice. My first S&W, and I really like it. nice trigger, and excellent condition, for its age...

rambozo and turk, welcome to the forum! Highway Patrolmen are a great place to start, and you've landed on THE definitive source for information on them. Rambozo, your HP is a five screw, and if the 134XXX number is the one on the bottom of the grip frame, it was probably made around 1954-1955. Most likely the original finish was matte blue. Turk, yours is probably an early model marked HP, probably 1959-1960. Enjoy your fine weapons!

Hi, gang! Finally have a couple pics ready for posting to this esteemed thread! The first is my 6" 1955(ish) HP finally wearing some correct stocks! The second is my rebuilt 28-2 Washington State Patrol commemorative, the one that had spent about a year wet and rusty. Installed a 3 1/2" 27 barrel, replaced the rear sight (also 27), had all the rust polished off, then a matte blue. Finished it with a nice set of Grashorns I bought from a member.
