The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Good choice for your 1st S&W! Nice specimen.:)

Welcome to the forum, too. You can learn a lot here!

Hey thanks!

Kinda silly, but what originally fascinated me about this gun was the movie Payback.

Anyway, it's got target grips on it now, but I'm really wanting to complete the "Payback" look by adding some S&W combat grips.

I'm seeing some on eBay and GunBorker in the $200- and up range...

Anybody know a place to find them cheaper, or is this just the going rate for S&W factory combat grips?

Another option would be the Hogue fancy hardwood grips w/finger grooves, but then I'd lose the medallions!!

I just saw this thread and wanted to add my 28-2 to the mix, N263xxx a 6". My Dad and I went shopping for a .357 way back in the 70's and ended up coming home with the HP. It was my first revolver and the fact my Dad and I went together to buy it makes it special to me. I was stupid enough to sell it to a friend in the 80's but came to my senses and bought it back two days later. It has been part of the collection ever since.

here's the first wheel gun t'hat I've ever bought.
A 28-2 HP 4" that, according to the s/n (N18XXX), should have been built in 1973.

Was a service gun of the San Francisco police dept. (see markings SFPD), some carrying wears, but perfect barrel and general mechanical conditions.

I LOVE this gun.

Got some new grips. I think they're purty, dunno if I like them more than the targets, though...

Anybody know anything about them?

Those look like Altamont stocks. Pretty nice for modern-style grips.

Hi Raven.

I hope you are enjoying your new old style shop.

Ha, not trying to out do your late serial number; but mine is AHZ287X

It sounds like yours is in fabulous condition.

All the best, Bill.

Second 28

I picked up a six inch about the middle of last year. I traded a Ruger Blackhawk for this four inch in Louisville early this year. N 59xx, 1969-1972 right? Stocks numbered to gun.

Wow, all the way in Italy. I work for the SFPD, and am amazed to see one of our guns there.

I have been following your forum for a few months now. Great place to learn and share. I have been collecting Sigs and now have the S&W revolver bug. A couple of months ago I bought my first Smith, a 625JM. I love it. Today I walked in to my LGS and found a pristine 28-2, serial #N270XX. I bought it based on what I have learned here. It does not have the original grips. I want to dress it up. I will get pictures posted soon.
Thanks!

28-2 with 4" s/n N240XXX

This one is a service weapon from the Texas DPS. I have a letter from the last Texas DPS Trooper who had the gun issued to him at the academy. He carried it on duty from 1986-1990 then went to a Sig 220 (IIRC) when they transitioned to autos. The gun shipped from Smith & Wesson in October 1975.

Well that narrows it down some.
If we have S2211xx as a model marked 28,, and S2214xx as a model 27-1 , we now know where to start looking for that 28-1.
I'm showing S223xxx as a 28-2 , so that narrows down the possibilities to about 2600 odd units.

No wonder no one has found a 28-1 yet

.

Good luck and enjoy your H.P.'s Regards ,,Al

I think I can help you narrow it further. My 3 screw 6" 28-2 has an S2218XX serial.

If this thread is still being updated, this one can be added to the stat block of owned guns listed in the first thread. Also, does this mean I have the earliest 28-2 here, or have others been found that I didn't read about?
