I purchased this 6” Highway Patrolman, Model 28-2, a little over 3 years ago. and this Highway Patrolman has a .400” smooth face semi-target trigger and a .400” semi-target combat hammer, per the SCSW book, 4th edition. In reading this Ultimate Highway Patrolman thread I haven’t seen many guns with the .400” smooth face trigger. It feels real good when shooting the gun. The serial # is N453XX indicating 1969 to 1972 production.
I have a M28-2 from 1973 (N189236) that also has the .400" smooth combat trigger and semi-target hammer. I wish all my S&W's had that trigger, it feels great.

Following, I have the same in nickel, a 6" with a reworked trigger. It's a tack driver using 38 Spl Wadcutters. Not looking to sell at this point, but curious as to the value.

Still looking for Non Model Marked 4 screw Highway Patrolman revolvers to add to the database. Please post if you have one or if you prefer PM or email me. Pictures would be appreciated or description with barrel length, stocks and serial number please provide full number if possible. Information will be kept confidential if requested.

I don’t remember if I’ve posted this before but here’s the only M28-2 4” that I own. I purchased it new in 1978 for $177 and still have the receipt, box and all the paperwork. The # is N5182XX indicating it was an early 78 production.

There's a really good chance your nickel 28 is a refinish. Pictures would help. It's hard to put a value on one without seeing it. Condition is everything, and though an aftermarket nickel job will impact value if it's well done it won't be too bad. Serial number range helps too...

@ A10.....

I posted pix in reply #1818 in this thread. The S/N is S195811. Good chance it has been refinished, and the trigger is very light, almost a "hair trigger' in the single action mode.

Picked this up Wednesday, 6 inch w/diamond targets. 450.oo off Gb but LGS so saved ship. S234179 . Muzzle wear on blue but tight. Recoil shield shows very little use.

Got any pictures?
Congrats! $450.00 for a working N-frame is a STEAL these days. Especially one with an S-prefix serial number and wearing diamond targets

Well now that the thread is back I might as well post my favorite Highway Patrolman - a 5 screw engraved and two-toned four incher with ivory grips I picked up at a show 3-4 years ago. The seller said his dad picked it up at an auction sometime in the 80`s but it didn`t come with a story so we don`t know who engraved it or who had the work done but from the wear and patina it looks like whoever had it originally got some use out of it before it got passed on.

I wish I could include a picture of my first Highway Patrolman and my first N frame .357 magnum- a well worn 4" model 28-2 I bought for a flat $100 from a local police lieutenant I knew when I was about 15. That model 28 taught me that I preferred the N frame to the K for shooting and for a belt gun and that the 8 3/8" barrel on my other N frame at the time, a nickel 29-3 was really just too long even if it looked cool. Sadly I let that first model 28 go 6-7 years later after I finally got my first model 27. These days I have plenty of N frame shooters and don`t NEED another 28-2 with only 40% or so of the blue finish left, but if I ever stumble across that particular one again at a local show I'll probably buy it back even if they want too much for it...

That is a definite winner! And I LOVE the Berns-Martin holster rig too. I had my eye on a similar rig at the beginning of the year, but unfortunately, never pulled the trigger. It makes for a great interesting pairing for your engraved Highway Patrolman.

Wow! Thats the purtiest 28 I've seen in my life!

Someone has been releasing NYSP model 28-2 revolvers in amazing condition recently. I purchased one on GunBroker a couple of years ago in like unused condition.

In 1983 I was a deputy sheriff in Laramie County, Wyoming. We got a new sheriff who banned semiauto pistols and mandated 38 revolvers. At the time I had a FFL and purchased around 24 revolvers for myself and other deputies from John Jovino in New York. Unfortunately I sold my Model 28 in 1984 when I went to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The one I purchased a couple of years ago brought one home.
