?

My new to me M27-2 The walnut magnas are ugly and useless to me even with Tyler T's so I got these coke palm swell Grips from Mr. Kurac and love them.

What kind of wood are the beautiful black Kurac Grips you show on your 3.5" nickeled Mod 27?

I'v watched this thread since it's start. It is one of my favorite threads, and shows many of my all time favorite revolvers the 3.5" Mod. 27, The most beautiful revolver in my world. I suppose it would be possible to make, a 3.5" 27 unattractive, but so far no one has done it, on this thread. The Mod. 27, in all its configurations are beautiful, and plus, have for me a great triggers. Over many years the 3.5" Mod. 27, has become my favorite revolver. Hope I didn't make it sound to syrupy, I'ts just the way I feel.

I guess it's time to update my 27 pistols post with my list of the newer additions and what the ones I posted earlier in this thread are wearing nowadays.

First up is my original 5" 27-2 I bought in 1974. It's wearing some nice Cocobolo Culina stocks now instead of the football targets.

Next up is my 6 1/2" 27-5 I bought a few years ago. It's wearing some Cordia wood Ahrends.

Next up is a 3 1/2" 27-2 I picked up off GB. It was well used and the nickel is peeling a little off the barrel but is shoots well. I have a set of Ahrends grips on it also but don't remember what wood it is.

Next is another pickup from GB. An unfired 27-2 with 4" barrel. I still haven't shot it and all I've done to it was give it a good cleaning and a good polish with Ren wax.

I ended up gifting my 5" 27-3 50th anniversary pistol to my daughter a few months ago. That really made her happy!:D

Ugly S&W nope not one ugly gun here. Ugly to me is a Astra 400/1921 and a Astra 600/43. They will never win a beauty contest, more in the cats gory of butt ugly.

Checkered top strap & Barrel?

I'd call it a serrated grove topstrap. I've also like ribbed barrel. The checkered thing is usually on the stocks.

Checkered stocks:

These are 6-groove rear straps (pre-27s):

The later ones had a 10-grove topstrap and a 10-grove backstrap. Here:

Please pardon me if I'v interfered with a thread of yours. GA 1911. I looked at the posts, before, and after, your post #362 where the question is asked " Why is the 27 top strap checkered?" I have never found that question answered. The question is good one, and needs to be answered. I hope I'm not stepping on toes here, or offending anyone, but here goes with my answer, as I see it. S&W wanted to embellish their top of the line revolver, so there would be no question in anyone's mind, what the top of the line was. I can't imagine What that embellishment cost, not only on the top strap, but also the top of the bbl., then or today, if the 27 was still made. Thinking back, I can't remember of another maker that has embellished their revolvers in this way. I think that this checkering, ranks right in there with engraving, and that is one of the reasons why the 27 is my favorite revolver, and the closest I'll ever get to an engraved one.

In my 68 years of life, I have never seen a model 27 come in a Philippian Mahogany case in central Illinois. Every one I ever owned or saw for sale was in a blue cardboard box. But, I've not seen everything.
