The 'unofficial' 58 Club

My opinion is that regardless of caliber be it .38 Special or .44 Magnum, over time all S&Ws will loosen up to some extent. How much and how fast depends on what it is being fed.

In the case of the .44 Magnum, a constant diet of full 240 grain factory loads will loosen the gun up quicker than a .41 on 210s....it seems there is just enough more metal to absorb the shock that it makes a noticeable difference.

In the case of the 58, it will loosen no quicker or slower than a 57 with the same loads. If you want to enjoy your 58 the most try and find some of the Georgia Arms 210 LSWC target loads. They are basically going the same speed as the original 210 Police Load and are much more fun to shoot. The Speer 210 Deep Curl (Gold Dot) HP is loaded a little slower than the Remington 210 SP and Federal 210 HP.

Congratulations on your Model 58, Rob!

I carry mine like this. In the winter, it's worn under a coat. In warmer weather, I wear it under a sport jacket, a vest, or, when hot, an unbuttoned Hawaiian-style shirt.

Only problem with this club...
I can't find a way in.

I've been looking for a shooter 58 for so long I forget why.
The last one I saw was $750 with rubber handles.
Guess I shouldn't have passed on all those ex-police 58s for three-four hundred bucks not so long ago.

$750 for a shooter grade is pretty much the norm around here....run of the mill N frames bring $500 and up, so you can expect to spend more for a 'cult' (limited production) gun.

I do hear of people getting lucky from time to time and finding a screaming deal, but those seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

I can tell you that I am not letting go of either of my 58's any time soon ;)

Love those Farrant's rob....I wish that I could find a fully checkered version with swells on both sides (in N frame).

The old ammo boxes are too cool for words, there can't be too many of those around either.

Welcome to the club :)

hi guys , thos ammo boxes are smaller than later boxes they also have a cardboard liner instead of styofoam liners of the later production.

Keep looking CherryRiver. If you want a bargain do not waste your time on line or at gun shows. they are both good entertainment, but poor fishing for bargains. I scour the local classifieds up to 150 miles from my home. I have found some very good deals that way. The 58 shown here was bought last year. It is a poor photo, but the gun is 95%+ condition, and it came with 220 rds of factory 210 gr ammo, for a sum south of $600. you are going to look longer and harder, but half the fun is in the hunt

hi guys in light that this model 58 is a S 260,xxxx mid year 1964 , I decide to old school , except for speed loaders , need those speed loaders when the flesh eating zombies come calling. looking for 18 round ammo loops or dump pouches , wonder if they made dump pouches in .41 magmum ??

Very nice robbt! Period correct would be the 12 round cartridge slide.

Still made in black basketweave by Triple K Holsters. And yes they did make dump pouches for the .41 you can use the 44/45 ones just fine, same with the cartridge slide.

Speed loaders did not come into common use until the late 1970's. I used cartridge slides on my duty gear right up until the early 1990's.

It obviously spent a large portion of its life riding around in a glove box. Internally, it looks like new. The ejector rod was almost perfect when I bought it telling me it wasn't shot much. I have put a few rounds thru it and will continue shooting it. The grips are modified targets I found in a lgs. Supposedly they were modified by a state trooper for his off duty gun. Not sure what it was but they work out pretty well on the 58. Yea, its a big heavy beast BUT it also packs a serious punch and there is just something about a fixed sight S&W! Being a HUGE 41 fan, its one of my favorite pieces. Been looking at others recently, might just have to increase my 58 collection to 2. ;)

Y'all boys are killing me.

I'm a .41 Mag junkie, and I cast and load for my 57 and Redhawk .41 Mag. And I carry the 57 off duty regularly. That said, I still haven't been able to score a good 58 (which I want in a bad way). It will happen one day, but who knows when.

Last week I was visiting with my retired lieutenant, and he casually mentioned having owned a pristine 58 years ago. He started his police career in '72 with a four inch Model 57 which he also sold years and years ago.

I know this is a little off-topic, but since we're talking about holsters and speedloaders, I hope this post is ok.

The New Jersey State Police used cartridge loop swivel holsters which remained virtually unchanged from the establishment of "The Outfit" in 1921 to the end of our revolver era in 1982-1983. The earliest of these holsters had 12 rifle cartridge loops (for our Winchester 94 .30-30 carbines) and 12 pistol cartridge loops. The later holsters eliminated the rifle loops and had 30 pistol cartridge loops in 2 rows. In the last 12-18 months or so of our revolver days, we switched from 6"-barreled revolvers to 4"-barreled Ruger Security Six stainless revolvers and went to some sort of security-type holster with the same cartridge loop setup. Both the revolver and holster were roundly disliked, but that's another story. :D

Here's a photo showing an earlier holster having both rifle and pistol cartridge loops.

Looks in decent enough shape to me, Mike!
