I did just see one at Whitetail Outfitters for 800 something with the original grips and box. Super condition and probably the first one I have seen for sale in years.

But there is a guy near me that has a NIB four inch blue model for sale. What would be the going price for something like this. It is as stated NIB with papers and tools. Not that I am a big box, papers, tool guy. They guy wants a grand for it. I think that this is too high. What say the model 58 gurus.

..a grand for a NIB is not at all unreasonable... I have have seen them bring up to $1300 on GunBroker.

Guess it depends what you want it for... To me at this point a NIB 58 is a collector piece that I would look at but never shoot...because there are more than enough shooter grade guns around.

WOW! I got mine for $370ish. post obama. Why are these guns going for so much? they don't even have sights. Looks like they started to cut some in but got lazy. Doeboy

I think that you are right....my 65 and 13 are formidable looking from the barrel side, and the 58's are downright tough looking with the big charge holes and beefy barrel. In a SD/HD situation, I don't expect anyone to ponder the looks of the gun being used...heck they probably would not have a very big gap between 'Oh shxx he has a gun' to (bright flash/loud bang). I was taught that if you pull it from the holster you had better be ready to use it right gxxdxxm now. Of course, police cadets are trained to hold people at gunpoint, so I guess that I got bad advice? .....but then again, I am not trying to arrest anyone, just stop whatever bad thing that is happening.

Anyone have a perp's point of view photo of their 58?

i bought a new one back in the mid 70's when i was working for a police department in the san francisco bay area. since our department did not allow on duty usage of the .41 magnum, i used mine for off duty carry. that sure didn't last long. the gun was heavy and holsters during that time were certainly not made for comfort. i carried mine in one of those cheap iwb holsters that clipped onto the belt. i lost interest in the model 58 very quickly and sold it, to whom, i do not remember. i probably sold it for a lost too. however, i do have a partial box of the remington 210 gr swc ammo that i bought along with the gun.

The Nickle engraved was once-opon-a-time a San Antonio PD issue according to my letter, I do not know the history of the re-plate/engraving, I bought it from an ad in the old "Gun List" from a pawn in Oklahoma that had no mention of the engraving/nickle, very suprised when I opened the box. The other is an "S" SN but I have never had it lettered. I carried it a few time on duty but not much. I reload an have some 900-1K 210 lead loads that are managable in fast DA strings. Keep shootin'

My dad bought this Model 58 on Dec 27, 1964 and carried it as his duty sidearm for a time. I was about a 100 lb 15 year old when Dad let me have a go at the .41 for the first time. I don't recall if I got close to what I was aiming at, but I do know it rocked me back on my heels

This is a '70s vintage 58 I bought about 1990.

I thought it only fitting that my 41st .41 Magnum in my collection be a new Classic Model 58.

The 58 is the modern day Frontier Revolver. The Single Action Army of the 1970's.
Fixed sights, heavy duty, large caliber, all around get it done tool.

GREAT threads indeed. I found a 1967-vintage M58 that was gently used. I traded a Wilson Combat custom Colt Gov't Model for it. I've wanted one for almost 30 years.

I sent it off to Dan Printz (danthegunman.com - Home) for his high polish blue. It's at my local SoCal smith getting put back together. I have an extra N-Frame bobbed DAO hammer with a countoured/polished trigger. I also have the original
.265" service trigger.

When it's done, I will have a set of Magnas with a T-Grip or a set of Don Collins custom Boot Grips in Indian Cocobolo.

I have come back to the .41 Magnum after a hiatus of 25+ years. Good cartridge. I like mine around 950-1000 fps with a hard cast 210 grain Keith-type SWC.

I think the M58 really shines as a backpacker's or horseman's gun. Yeah, I know they're heavy, but to paraphrase Clint Smith: "A gun should be COMFORTING...not comfortable."

The power level that one can use covers a wide spectrum. For serious business, I have Speer God Dots @1200 fps. Probably too much of a good thing, but who cares.

They're wonderful guns...no matter WHO you are. You can't argue with their utility. Just my $.02!

Another convert in the works!

Well with all the drought and wildfires going on around us here, I have not had much time to hit the range, but 2 weeks ago I got the chance to bring a little 41 magnum goodness into the life of one uninitiated soul

A co-worker of mine wants to buy a model 13 from me and he wanted to try it out first, so I took him down to my local range.

...I let him run a box of 50 38 specials though her and then a handful of barn-burner 125 grain magnums....he was pretty impressed with the little 13.... until I let him touch of a cylinder full of 210 grain JSP's out of my blued model 58....now he wants to skip the 13 and get a model 58 instead....I have since helped him realize that he can have both (and that his wife will appreciate the model 13 more).

Anyone have a decent 58 to pass along to a potential convert? (there's no way that I am getting rid of either one of my hard fought 58's )

I was looking at the 2nd page of the ad that shows "comparative ballistics".....I must be the only one who noticed that the 41 rounds were using a 8 3/8" barrel versus 6" for 38, 6.5" for the 44 mag/special and 5" for the 45 ACP....I can't say that I have seen a 8 3/8" barrel on a model 58...I wonder what the ad guys were thinking?

I noticed that too. I'll have to check the data sheet for the model 57, I'm thinking the ad people probably used the same ballistics table that was used for the model 57.
I do like the way they differentiate the two loads available for the 58
".41 Magnum" for the jacketed high velocity round.
".41 M&P" for the lead standard velocity round.

Police loads for the 58

I have been tinkering around with the reloads for my 58...now I have these nagging little questions...

Did S&W ever market it with a SWCHP ?

Did/does anyone make any oddities (full wadcutter, SWCHP, ect) in the lead bullet department?

What's the fastest you have run your 210 grainers and still been really close to POA?

What was the slowest 210gr (or lighter) load that still makes POA?

I have seen some reloading threads for the 41, but I am more interested in the loads that are tailored to the 58's.
